I am thinking of buying some remo oil filled heads for one of my Clubdate sets. I will have one kit tuned down for small gigs and the other for the loud shows.I was wondering if any of my fellow CLUBDATE owners use the oil filled heads for the toms 12" ,14" and 16".If so how is the sound? Thanks,Vati

I wouldn't do it. I use single ply coated heads with clear resos.

I dont think you'll like the sound of them. I never did. I used them in the 70's but was never thrilled with them. Kind of had an "inner tube" tire sound.

I am pretty sure that Evans Hydraulic heads are the only ones with actual oil in them. Everything Remo that looks like oil is just the two layers of head refracting the light. Like a prism. Everyone has opinions, but the oil filled Evans heads are very heavy, very dead, and had there place in the 80s and on concert toms.....

Yeah....booo to the hydraulics...unless you have a really dumpy set that sounds horrible and you want to hide that fact with thick non musical sounding heads.

I would think Emperor batter/Ambassador reso-or the equivalent, with a well placed moongel would be plenty-STAY AWAY FROM THE MOOSEQUOCK!

Remo Ambassadors are my favorite skins on the Clubbies.

Coated on top and clear on bottom will make them sing like you won't believe.

I hate the double-layer-oil-pinstripe kind of heads.

Why would you ruin a beautiful sounding vintage drum kit with those ??

I used Evans clear hydraulic heads for years and liked them very much, on my Gretsch 6 ply Jaspers. However, way different than Clubdates, I know. What I liked was the easy tuning and controlled sound, yet nice ovetone (used with Evans G1 resos). However, tastes change and I now use G1 Coateds with G2 Clear resos. Sakes alive. I'd use the Clear hydraulics again, in the right project.

My two coins.

I think you ought to do it and satisfy your own curiosity. What's the worst ... you won't like it. Big deal. But ... what if you did?

Heck, if we all had the same ears, music would suck roaches. The heads won't put you out too much. Have some fun and experiment. I've found some pretty wild combinations by swapping all kinds of heads. Drumming is an art. Swim against the other fish and discover something about yourself. Go, man. Go.
