Is there a special cocktail style snare? I saw a really nice Gretsch kit an the snare looked to be 12". Some how I need to buy or make a cocktail kit more the smaller stage/ 4 songs and out gigs. I don't want to empty the bank on something I won't use very often.But want it on hand just in case... Thanks,Matt

Be warned: once you get bitten by the cocktail bug, it can be consuming! :)
Snare options range from the 8" popcorn snares that come with the sub-$250 GP cocktail kits and the more expensive "Trixon" and Yamaha Club Jordan kits, to the full 14" sized snares on the Peace Manhattan and the "Trixon" Vertikalen, to the integrated snares that most people associate with vintage "cocktail kits."
If you're looking for portability, cocktail kits are a great option, but they require a slightly modified playing style and produce a unique sound that may not be for you. You may also want to consider mini kits like the Ludwig Breakbeats, Sonor Martini, Gretsch Street Kit, etc., or even a djembe or mini conga.
