Columbia calf heads...? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

Hello all, I'm getting ready to tuck a set of 25.5'' calf skin heads on the flesh hoops from a 20's/30's Ludwig universal bass drum. I'm kind of on a budget, so I was wondering if these ''columbia'' heads on eBay are worth it. Anybody have experience with them? Also, is 2.5'' enough extra head to tuck around bass drum flesh hoops? I'm planning on buying these http://cgi.ebay.com/Two-New-28-Dia-Natural-Calf-Cow-Skin-Heads-1st-Quality-/250354321847?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a4a47c9b7

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Columbia heads are better for display or heavy bashing ala field drums, floor toms, etc but they are serviceable. Certainly not the quality of Stern but much cheaper.

The rule of thumb for sizing is to add 4" for a smaller head with a smaller flesh hoop (snares and toms) and 6" for a larger drum with larger flesh hoops (bass drum and timpani). So for a 25.5" drum, you'd need at least a 30" if not a 32" skin. Oversized is okay - you can always cut it down. Undersized is bad - it leads to you throwing things around the room and a giant wet dead calf skin on you kitchen counters.

Just call or email Columbia and tell them what you want. (I've dealt with the manager, Tariq several times before.) Their English can be challenging but they are nice enough. Their product comes from Pakistan.
