I need to settle an on-going "lively discussion" among a few friends. What is considered the more valuable find in today's market -- a 14" Ludwig floor tom in excellent condition or a 14" Gretsch floor tom in comparable condition, assuming the same or similar wrap? ALL OPINIONS welcome! Thanks!

Do you really think it can be settled? :)

Both will fetch big bucks. There are, IMO, many more Ludwig ones out there to be found... so with the Gretsch being more "rare," you'd think they would be the ones worth more.

I just know that when I've come across any brand of 14x14 floor tom I have no trouble finding them new homes... the last Ludwig one I had really put a smile on my face when it went to its new home!

I believe it is Market Bearing. And it's always better to have 2 people interested. I would be happy finding either but I would prefer Ludwig.

My 2 cents..

First of all I am a vintage Ludwig fan and have a few 60's kits.

One of them in the gallery.

I have owned only 1 60's Gretsch kit.

There are a few things to consider.

If you are talking vintage drums (1960's) my vote would have to go to the Gretsch 14 FT.

Reason being I believe they were made better back then. Tone controls on top and bottom heads. The shell used seems to be solid construction.

The 14 Ludwig FT shell back then in many cases was slightly out of round.

The ludwig drum was lighter in weight than the gretsch.

Both sound great!

I cannot comment on the newer drums from Ludwig or Gretsch.

I've sold two 14 Luddy floors in the past year or so. The most I paid for one (2 years ago) was 125. I think that you are more likely to get a serious deal on a Luddy floor than a Gretsch floor.

Give me a Rogers 14 anyday.

I think the same as the others. I would take either one in a heartbeat, but I think the Gretsch would be a little more valuable and harder to find. But at the same time if you get two guys both needing the same 14x14 regardless of brand on ebay and a bidding war starts - prices can get crazy fast!

A G. 14" FT will hit $750-1,000 pretty easily......

How much for a Luddy?>$350-500?....MAYBE $750?

I think that round badge Gretsch would trump just about anything except for Ludwig burgundy sparkle,60's Oyster black pearl,Thermogloss maple, black galaxy, and citrus mod.Big bucks for those puppies.

I've sold several 14" fl toms by both companies the past few years, vintage 50 -60's toms. Beyond doubt, the Gretsch will command much more, (even in much worse condition).
