composition of my Ludwigs Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hi,

I have a Ludwig kit from the mid-sixties. I call it a Ringo kit, but it's actually BDP with 13/16/20 drum sizes. What would the wood make up of these drums be? My eyes are quite bad, and I can't tell the number of plies, and certainly not the kind of wood. I also have a matching Jazz Fest. I'm considering selling these soon and want to know should anyone ask. Thanks so much for your help.

They will be 3 ply drums. They are most likely mahogany/poplar/mahogany, especially if the interiors are white. The mid 68 and later models had clear maple interiors.

Thanks Mike. Yes, the interiors are white. I would guess they would be called 'classics' since I added the snare later, although it's from the same time period.

Anyway, I appreciate the response.

What Mike said, but additionally some Ludwigs of that era have maple on the inside instead of mahogany. that was one reason for the white paint, so they'd match in appearance even if they didn't in wood makeup. You might even have a mixture of mahogany and maple interiors. They all sound good though.

Yes, marko, the bass drum has 2 pairs of telescoping spurs. Does that mean anything special?

Thanks.

You say that you may be selling these nice looking drums soon. Please resist the temptation to call this set a Ringo set in any "for sale" listings for the drums. They can stand on their own merits without doing so.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Yes, I would never call them a Ringo set in an ad. I just call them that compared to my other kits. Wrong color and sizes for a Ringo kit.

Thanks.

Super classic, with optional 20" bass drum, with optional dual telescoping Spurs.

Or just call it a 60's Ludwig set. 'Nuff said.

Cool little kit.
