Correct muffler and throw for Ludwig 402 Last viewed: 19 hours ago

I acquired a 402 a few years back with a serial of 2155577 and has the "all chrome" P85. Our hardware guide says the "all chrome" came in about 1984.

Is this consistent with this serial number?

Also, she arrived without a muffler....although I don't use the mufflers on my snare drums, I would like to install one to be aesthetically correct.

Would it be correct to install a big-knob, mounting screw above-the-knob version....?

(please excuse the phone pics...I'm outta batteries for my camera)

Thanks, all...!!

Hi Kevin!

Yes, big knob muffler with mounting screw above. Just order a new one, which are reasonably priced!

Hard to say on the strainer. I've got some snares from this period. I've actually seen some black face 2 hole and 12 hole p85's on these. The 12 holes had been replaced by the 2 hole long before this, but have seen quite a few around '84. Maybe Ludwig preparing to move from Chicago to Monroe and using up old surplus. I'm not sure when they introduced the all chrome model. Certainly doesn't look out of place on there.

Check the holes closely on the shell. One hole may be slightly larger than the other and would usually be the knob hole. I would expect to see the knob up top on the 6.5 version though. Great drum!

From my records, most of the throws on drums with serial numbers in that range are the two hole version of the Black faced P85.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72
