Curry Custom Drums? Last viewed: 1 minute ago

Loading...

Hi everyone. I've been here once before and got some great help. I ran across a 14"x3" metal piccolo snare drum (12 lugs) by "Curry Custom Drums" in an oval badge. I couldn't find anything online except maybe that this is a line put out by the drummer for Bryan Adams....something Curry. What can you tell me about its source and value? Thanks!

Warren - I waited to see if anyone would post some info for you so I could learn something new myself. But judging by the deafening silence, I don't think anyone has any info for you. Kind of a first around here!

Too many great drums to list here!

I don't have any current details, but I last saw Curry maybe 10 years ago. They were one of over 100 boutique builders using Keller shells, etc.

Or maybe I'm thinking of Thumper Custom Drums...

Sounds interesting. There have been so many drums put out by drummers for famous people. I remember when Huey Lewis' drummer started a drum company in the late '80s or early '90s. Usually, there are small numbers and short runs.

The value would be determined by what shape it's in, if anyone knows who this Curry guy is, and how much someone is willing to pay for it. In many cases, unless it is Craviotto quality, these boutique drums just don't bring in the Benjamins.

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

I agree...and I build boutique drums...one trip to GhostNote or any of the other builder sites will show you of what we speak. There are a handful of successful boutique builders...there are thousands of unsuccessful ones. I build for myself & a (very) small client base...this was a hobby until I lost my job, I am now actively working to expand my client base. I've been working with wood & restoring furniture since childhood, so all of my builds have natural hand rubbed finishes...for the most part Tung Oil. I also do not use Keller shells, other then their Vintage Mahogany's with re-rings. Got a guy in England that makes my Birch shells, got a good friend in Kentucky that makes my Stave shells (with milled in re-rings) and use VaughnCraft for solid steambent shells.

Here's a couple links to recent snare builds & a Walnut Stave kit I'm building for myself.

I've seen a few Curry snares floating around on the Bay, but never seen one in person. I've got a mystery Boutique myself, it's a TimeTech 12 ply natural finish Maple, built in Canada. Great snare & very well crafted...who ever built this really loved what they were doing, but I can't find one damn thing out about this builder. Here's a pic, maybe someone here knows this guy.

Your links are dead.

I would love to see examples of your work.

Speaking of weird, esoteric boutique stuff, I have an Acoustic Theology drum. Strainer mechanism is of dubious quality, and it looks to have Trick-style lugs. With the snare taped to the reso head, it sounds good, though I know it can be better once I get a good strainer on it.

I love to support the independent boutique builder. But I am also thinking of doing my own drums. On the onset, I would outsource my edges, but I will learn how to do those, as well. Let's just say I have my own ideas as far as edges go, and I think these ideas would translate well onto wood.

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

That walnut stave kit looks absolutely incredible! And that Bacota shell (or w/e that wood is called) I think I need a snare made of that stuff hahaha

I love the combination of the single-point mount Ego lugs with the Millennium strainer. Great combination and look. The wood in the shell is to die for. I'd like to build a kit using those Ego lugs. Makes for a clean (small hardware footprint) modern look.

Really nice work, man!

John
