Custom Snares Thread Last viewed: 42 seconds ago

I did one of those a couple of years back. I had a badly pitted keystone Supra stripped and then the aluminum was polished. The polished aluminum looked better than the original chrome! I guess it qualifies as a 'Rat-Rod.'

Too many great drums to list here!

Nothin ratty about that drum, it looks great. Those tube lugs must have the same hole spacing as the luddy ones did. I have a badly pitted supra, now you got me thinking!

Thank you!

Steve, sadly no, it went as part of a swap for a kit. I'll do one again just for sh*ts and giggles sometime.

Jeff - If you do it, pay the extra for the clear-coat! The one in the photo will look just like it does now, 20 years from now. It'll never pit again. Worth doing to save a nice 'keeper' Supra.

John. That Supra is beautiful and while not a Rat, certainly a great custom. No rules here.

I actually got a flaking, rusty Supra from VistaBob (thanks!!!) and I'm looking into getting it dechromed and polished. After reading a bunch of posts, I've asked for a professional quote. I'm thinking now I should inquire about having it polished and clear-coated in the same shot.

Has anyone here de-chromed a Supra at home with much success?....

I've read about everything from Easy-Off to Coca-Cola to HCl, etc. I have no workshop or garage (NYC apartment) so if anyone has any ideas that work in my kitchen and are low on the toxicity meter, I'm all ears.

I love seeing what everyone has been building though!!

Bringing this one back from the dead...

Finally finished and photographed the Supra I mentioned above.

I ended up sanding down the chrome myself. Lot of elbow grease there.

Then hit the shell with a flat black rattle can (2-3 light coats, sand, 2-3 coats, sand, repeated until the can was gone).

Original lugs and strainer went back on (after being Dawn soaked and scrubbed).

And I got some 3.0mm MIT hoops.

Sounds fantastic.

Really happy with how the paint came out. Figured it was in line with thinking of this like a rad rod.

So I've already got a Black Beauty and a Blackrolite. Now a Black Rat to add to the family.

I know this is a snare thread, but you did mention rat-rods. I did this with some old single tension marching drums (so still snares shells). 14x10 WFL, 16x12 Leedy, 24x14 Slingerlend. Brought them modern with new Allstar Lugs and generic claws. Slap some flat black primer... &

Some may not care for that sort of thing on this forum but I, for one, like it a lot. Very cool. I bet it sounds great as well.
