Cymbals concerns (again) Last viewed: 10 hours ago

Here I go again, last night we got lots of compliments on our show, however one drummer came up to me and said my cymbals were not to musicial as he put it, loud with no character. I was playing rudes and 2002's. I thought they were fine, but i respect other drummers opinion from the audience. Its expensive to buy high quality cymbals, but if anyone can pass on a few series I might try, let me know. I've done some research on these UFIP cymbals, and I'd also like to try Sabian, but I dont know much about them. I need loud with projection, thanks, G

I would not give much thought to what some one else s ears have said do you play for them or you? I have never heard 2002's that were not good sounding....

I would ask someone else to play them and listen to them myself. Your ears know what sound your looking for.

Agreed!!!. Also he was listening to you through a PA correct? we all know how that can affect your sound.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

"What should a cymbal sound like?"

You could debate that question for eons and never get a consensus.

Sound, like beauty, is in the eye/ear of the beholder. Everyone’s tastes differ, which is why we have umpteen different models of cars (and cymbals).

My kit:
Ludwig Vistalite Big Beat set consisting of:
14” X 22” bass, 16” X 16” floor tom, 8” X 12” ride tom, 9” X 13” ride tom, 5” X 14” snare
Ludwig 201 Speed King bass drum pedal
Ludwig 1124 Spur-lok hit-hat with Ludwig Standard Paiste 14” cymbals (760 & 770 gr) with ching-ring
Two Ludwig Standard S-270 cymbals stands
18” Zildjian crash cymbal (1550 gr) and 20” Zildjian ride cymbal (2130 gr) with CAMCO sizzler
Gibraltar motorcycle seat-style drum throne with backrest

Lots of positive comments, but one know-it-all who had beef with your cymbals? I wouldn't worry about it, especially if those opinions were offered without being asked. Probably someone who doesn't like Paiste.

Rudes (and Z's) aren't my style, but if your setup works for you and your band, don't change.

Loud with projection,...Stay away from anything light, look for dark blend in color, I find that quality vintage just don`t do well loud. Vintage MIJ and heavy A`s are great to hit anyway you want and get loud plus projection. I like the "musical sustain", but the next beat drowns it out before it can sustain !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Perhaps it depends on what kind of music that your are playing?

Should it be a clear ping without much sustain…..or much more full with a hearty resonance?

I often found that I liked the sound of other drummers cymbals, but I couldn’t find them.

I eventually gave up.

Most of my cymbals are Zildjian 1960s vintage, however I have an old 20” Zyn that was once drilled for sizzle, it had a nice flat sound that married with the other cymbals,…so I used it.

After a while I stopped breaking my head over the sound of cymbals and different drum heads….and just played.

Do you like your cymbals?

Thats what matters really.

Have you heard them recorded, or as mentioned, being played by someone else?

Cymbal sound is a real personal area of preference.

Slingerland (G.) plays Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and lots of other heavy stuff, from what I have seen watching the video links he has provided. With that said, I agree with some of what has been said about the drummer picking the sound, not a random audience member.

My rule of thumb for cymbals is pretty simple and time proven. Whichever cymbal has the best chance of pi$$ing off the neighbors, and possibly breaking windows, is typically the one I go to the most often! If the neighborhood dogs aren't barking, It isn't loud enough......
