Dating A Monroe Black Beauty Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Loading...

I just acquired this super minty black beauty from the Monroe era. The strainer has the black background. I was under the assumption that they went to the silver background around 1984...but isnt that also when they moved to Monroe?

History lesson time! Help me!

Is it a 1988ish "bronze series" drum and not a black beauty? Its a confusing thing, but the snare gates look like the 1988 catalogue exactly. Also, it does have the "B" stamped above the muffler knob. Any help would be appreciated.

First off, every time I see a thread title like this, I really want to reply with something snarky. Perhaps the joke is funnier left unsaid.

Very attractive drum you have there. I bet it sounds killer.

I NEVER understood how a manufacturer could allow their badge placement to end up underneath the head collar/batter rim. That is truly stupid. I have a Monroe era 6.5 BB that is close to having the same issue. Did it not occur to them that they didn't have to center the vent between the bead and the bearing edge?

Other than that completely useless bit of drivel, I am if no further help here. Congratulations on the drum acquisition though.

"B" stamp = Brass (if you didn't know that already)

This could be an old shell that had the vent hole drilled for a B/O badge. The strainer is interesting. It's the black background "Ludwig", but it has the plate instead of the snare cord holes. I'm sure the Ludwig "pros" will chime in.

Aside from the oddities, which make this drum unique, you have a spectacular snare.

Thanks for the helpful reply. Why is is crazy to ask for help tns? I know the serials mean nothing, but based on the parts used---isn't it possible to get some idea? The heads are original, so there is no way anything was messed with on this drum.

Oh you misunderstood. My apologies. Asking for help in identifying a drum is one of the great things about this forum. My comment was simply in the other connotations of questions about dating. Responses such as "flowers are always a nice touch" come to mind. See? Snarky.

I re-read the title, and now I get it. Sorry for flying of the handle. I had just woken up and my razor sharp wit was not functioning!.

And since it is Monroe, perhaps a nice dinner at a Cajun restaurant.

Yeah, right! Bad plan! Try to get her to play after a heavy meal of crawfish & red beans and rice! Eye Ball

Sweet snare. I think Thornbeck nailed it... early 70's shell because of the vent-hole placement.

John

Too many great drums to list here!
