Common mistake, I always thought tubular = Hercules and flat = Atlas

Atlas had all the same attributes that people identify with Hercules. They see the tubular legs, the black handles, and the big rubber feet and think it's a Hercules. Atlas had all those things. The difference was the size of the tubing. The Hercules had a larger top section and a much beefier tilter. If you see the size reduction near the top of the middle tube then you're looking at an Atlas.

Here's a comparison...Atlas on the left Hercules on the right.

I love flat base Atlas, mine don't have the later black plastic T handles though.

From frantic freddie

Those aren't Atlas, they're early Hercules stands. Atlas had flat legs, Hercules have the tube legs. Why Ludwig thought those swivel feet were a good idea is beyond me, with the hard rubber/vinyl on the bottom they slid all over the place. Yes, I do have one. They didn't last long before Ludwig started putting big rubber feet on them.

.......................................................................................................

Ya wanna know my take on the swivel feet?..I made this up...

OK..Joe Smith has been working at design at Lud for quite some time..but ideas are slow......and B2 calls him in...and says if he doesn't come up with some new ideas very soon.....he is fired!

So..Joe goes to the bar to have a few and think....

While drinking..Joe looks at the bar stool feet on his chair..and sees they swivel.......light bulb goes off in his head...what if Lud applies these to cymbal stands etc!...

Brings the idea into B2's office...and B2 is impressed!>>Joe keeps his job...new idea for Lud!

.................................................................................................

What do ya think?.....Plausible?

Every one of the snare drum stands in my jr. High school band had those swivel feet. I always thought that they stole them off the class room chairs that had the same feet.

Guess Rio Tierra got all their hardware in '76.

And just a side note.

I always thought Atlas should be above Hercules.

Atlas was a Titan and held the earth upon his shoulders.

Hurcules was the son of Zeuse and a mortal woman.

Just saying...
