Just noticed that there were no replies on this thread, so I thought I'd. Put in my two cents. It looks like some of the outfits did come with a cowbell as an option. Interesting little observation - I have an original sales receipt from one of my Ludwig kits that shows that the buyer opted out of the cowbell and took a credit on the kit.
