Differences between 60's vs 70's Ludwig Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Howdy y'all

I'm interested in knowing the differences between a 60's ludwig, and a 70's ludwig.

So far the differences that i've found are:

1. The badge

2. The spurs

3. The centre pole mount/rail consolette (yes i know some 70's kits used a rail consolette)

Are there any other things people can think of?

Where the bass drum hoops different? were the bearing edges different? were the lugs/tension rods different? Was the positioning of the badge different?

Thanks guys!!

Up until about 1968, the interiors were 3-ply/solid maple reinforcement ring with an interior ply of mahogany (painted white) and had the wraps tucked into the scarf joint of the shell, itself. After 1968, the interiors were 3-ply/solid maple reinforcement ring clear maple and the wraps were no longer tucked into the shell scarf joint.

oh awesome!!! thanks o-lugs!!

are you familiar with the differences in bearing edges? i've heard people saying

"this bearing edge profile makes it more likely to be 60's, and that bearing edge profile makes it more likely to be 70's,"

but didn't pick up on the actual difference

Sometimes, in the 70's, they started to cut bearing edges a little sharper...but it wasn't consistent and you see both rounded and sharper edges during this period.

I had a green sparkle 70's B/O badge Pioneer once and it had sharp bearing edges. At first, I thought someone recut the edges, but the shell had not been cut down. Later, I read lots of similar accounts of such edges, so I assume these discrepancies originated at the factory.

ohhhhh cool.

Do you (or anyone else for that matter) know where i could find a "blueprint" of the 60's bearing edge?

and i've also read in some places that the 60's hardwear had nickel in it? chrome over nickel or something?

does that sound right?

iirc earlier 60's had the NOB or COB hardware.

My '65 snare is NOB.

Location of the Badge is lower on the late 60's Keystone drums vs. the 70's B/O badges.

The wingnuts/eyebolts on early/mid 60's leg brackets are smaller diameter.

The lugs are further from the bearing edges by about a 1/2" on the 60's drums - on the floor toms, anyway:
