Different size set-o-matic? Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

Recently sold someone a Slingerland Bass & Tom Mounts for the Set-O-Matic. The issues is his tom arm isn't fitting into the bass or tom mount, it's slightly larger. Did Slingerland make two slightly different versions over the years?

I dont think so. Some of the posts are round to fit into a double tom stand rather than the crimped center that goes into the bass plate. Also somtimes one or the other gets damaged and wont go in smoothly or not at all.

No the same size.... Guess is that he has the Round tube post that was only used for the floor stand version... as opposed to the standard flattened/slot type..

Cheers

I think his arms are off. Said one tom fits, but not the other ( same arm ) and that it won't fit through the bass. Here are a few pics.

Technically should fit... But pic 3 shows some sort of damage to the tube end... (those 2 cuts/cracks ?)... may be some burring too.. I'd be doing a little grinding..

His Setomatic is the first-generation aluminum version. Yes, the posts themselves are slightly larger than those provided on the chrome plated version. My 1968 Slingerland BR kit came with the aluminum Setomatic and tom/bass mounts. When I tried a newer chromed arm, I also had to switch out the mounts to the chromed version for everything to fit. Hope this helps!

What has me a tad confused is he said the same arm fits through one tom mount and not the other. Yet I acquired both from the same kit, so I know they are both the same chrome version. And it didn't appear to be altered.

Jay,

This issue is production variances. The bottom line is that the buyer has an early setomatic arm with the aluminum body. The metal "D" posts at both ends are not the same as those in the chromed body. His choices are to either obtain aluminum bass/tom mounts or a chromed Setomatic arm.

I just tried inserting my aluminum Setomatic arm into a late 70's 9x13 concert tom with chrome mount. The Setomatic arm would not go in!

Always nice to document things like this. Can someone get a micrometer on a newer SOM tube? This is a aluminum first gen.

Glenn!

Excellent job! Unfortunately, I don't have a micrometer to take those measurements.

There's a reason Slingerland used the aluminum Setomatic arm and mounts for only one year; they were rushed to market and poorly made. Introduction of the chromed Setomatic, with matching mounts, fixed things up considerably.
