I've done some things suggested in this thread to get a head on a drum, ..dremel the inside of the ring, & also carefully breaking the hoop at the joint to allow the head to expand a little. They both work & have held their strength for many years.

Use -four- cuts, not three. Better results, not so much stress on the head with four cuts. Avoid tearing. Tunes up perfectly.

Beautiful drums! Yes the lugs look like the second version of the BT "super" lugs with the little lip on top. A peek inside the shell (post a pic) will help confirm the timeframe.Your snare looks brand new!! Amazing condition that one is in, very nice!
Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Nice drums! I got my first Slingerlands last summer, they are great, love em. I have an issue with tight heads on my snare drum. Its a 59 Krupa the other drums are early 60's. Only the snare has the head problem. Im gonna try Johns idea.

I agree with John. Cut slits in the hoop of the head. I just did this for the 1st time the other day, the gretsch kit I got wouldnt take heads. I did 12 and 6, cut almost through and snap the last millimeter of metal. I was so pleased with the outcome, works wonders on it.
A huge thanks for all the responses guys. I will start with trying the four cuts and report back. Vintage Amb, here I come!
