Do Vintage Drums "Require" Vintage Cymbals? Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Loading...

As some of you might recall, I've started playing again after a "short" break of about 30 years.Hurting

All of the kits I currently own as well as the cymbals (all Avedis Zildjians) that I've got are from the 60s or earlier eras. Since I haven't purchased a cymbal in what seems like "forever" I'm wondering whether the majority of forum members feel that a vintage kit, when actually being played out, requires that vintage cymbals be included in the set-up.

I'd also like to know which crash cymbals (make, size and weight), vintage or not, you believe would provide the best quality sound for a group that plays a significant amount of blues, country and classic rock. I guess my concern is that if I do purchase a crash cymbal in the near future I'd like to assure that I'd be getting the "best bang for the buck" (a little attempt at humor here)!

As usual, thanks in advance for your time and your help!Bowing

For me cymbals are a very personal thing. Unlike drums you can't manipulate the sound if a cymbal, what you hear is what you get. Unless you take a hammer to it or like the look of tape on your cymbals LOL. I really like the sound of Paiste Sound Creation cymbals. They also haven't been made in 20 years so they are becoming unique and quite expensive. So for me I do like vintage cymbals with my vintage drums however they aren't nearly as old as my vintage drums!

As for buying new cymbals, trust your ears as to what pleases you. There are far more brands and choices since you last bought a cymbal 30 years ago so make sure you check them all out and have fun!

While it may look a little odd to have cymbals with giant AAX logos with a vintage set, but certainly not required.

As long as the logo is worn out, anything can pretty much blend in nicely with a vintage set.

It just depends. I have "sets" of cymbals. I group certain cymbals that blend well for a particular style. Some of these contain a mix of old and new. Some are all old and some are all new. I believe most all are hand hammered. I think most drummers are ear guided with cymbals. I never depend on brand. It's all sound.

I plan to use the same cymbals with my "new" Slingerlands as I do with my "old" Yamahas.

It's a set that has been painstakingly assembled and includes A, A Custom, and K Zildjians; Paiste 2002s; and Sabian AAX and HHX. None of the cymbals were purchased new and none were purchased without being tested alongside the others.

My preference runs to darker, hand-hammered sounds.

I don't really like ostentatious cymbal logos. My A's date from the mid-'70s and have no logos.

It IS all about the sound.

Add cymbals according to sound. Don't be afraid to try some new cymbals as today there are so many great sounding cymbals made by many different companies.
