Dodgy moment at gig Last viewed: 22 minutes ago

Just thought I might as well try to open something up here. ..Has anyone ever had something go wrong at a gig. I had a gig tonight, whilst setting up already sweating loads from hot lights and being generally a bit overweight and not as fit as I could be. - AND nervous , the guitarist said its being recorded for the radio!!! ? We are a community big band. Now The 1st number went great, so then I was realy ready to gig to best of my ability - Then suddenly I felt my drum stool break while I was playing- a few drum charts later and much wobbling and trying to keep it together a total nightmare, it just broke I was lucky not to go flying so now bass player gives me his very low chair - well I'm sorry but I just can't play sitting low.so I do feel it 'threw me off kilter' in more ways than one. it affected my playing for the worst or I think it did. . I just need to vent. Anyone had anything similar happen? Cooked Egg

Thanks for sharing that. It could happen to anybody. I've started the wrong song before (while the rest of the band started another). Things happen.

Not related, but I once asked a friend who looked down "what's up with you, you look like your dog died"- which is an expression where I'm from. It turns out that her dog had just died that morning and my saying that made her cry. Dumb luck and bad timing on my part.

I had the locating pin snap off my throne seat during a show. And I've had the beater snap off the pedal rod, both during gigs. Both these happened around 35 years ago, and I'm still very maintenance -oriented after those incidents. My wife bought me a Roc-n-Soc 20 years ago and its still going strong. I had to use a folding chair for the remainder of the gig-VERY low...

I've carried two pedals to a lot of gigs. Hadn't thought of the seat, but that's one to consider as well. The main thing is, you can usually see wear and tear ahead of time. But it means you have to check the gear between gigs pretty closely. But having either the seat or pedal give out is pretty critical stuff. Another one to watch for is snare strings. Always have a set with you, but check them before gigs. Don't go out with tired strings. Simple, but easily overlooked. Tough to play a gig with all toms!

I was playing to a fairly large audience at a festival with a backline hire kit (Hate using kits that arent mine at the best of times). It was a yamaha stage custom. Anyway half way through the 2nd song the kick pedal basically explodes on me into a few pieces. The roadie took about a minute to get it going again but damn its embarassing when your band thinks youve just decided to stop playing haha

I had the exact same thing happen at a gig back in the 80's. We actually had it on video, although I have no idea where it is. The stool broke right in the middle of a song and the camera was right on me, you could see the fear in my eyes, but I didn't fall, I just continued playing standing up. I had to use a chair the rest of the gig.

I've had bass drums that have crept away constantly through a show, A mounted tom fall off of a house kit(i mean bust right off)... I broke a bass pedal beater rod that ended up going through the batter head...Cymbal stands collapse or fall. Even buddy rich sat on a house kit on a show talk show I can't remember the name of, while he's ripping through a solo, the mounted tom mount breaks and the drum drops.

It's metal and wood and sh@t happens. I wouldn't waste too much agony over it. I look back and laugh at those things and wonder why I got upset over such a thing. Life is too short.

My theory is metal parts are brought in after ( as in my case) being left in a colder place ( the only things I leave in back of car are stands and stool) and then brought in to a very hot room so the metal which s times already weak expands and breaks or at the least loosens causing the parts to loosen and sometimes actually break.
