Does this fit on vintage Ludwig ?? Last viewed: 21 hours ago

Hey guys.. Just had a question regarding the modern Ludwig Rail consolette .. I was wondering if anyone has ever replaced a vintage Ludwig rail consolette with Ludwig's modern version ?.. I'm not talking about the atlas rail mount, but the one in the pic i've posted..

I was just curious because when i do get my next vintage Ludwig kit with a vintage rail consolette, i was thinking of replacing it with this modern version, and was wondering if the hole spacing is the same ?..

Any thoughts would be appreciated..

Cheers !

Hole spacing is NOT the same. It will not fit the same holes. I made that mistake myself.

Spacing of mount brackets is different between the two AND the O.D of the newer

rail is larger so you can't interchange the old and new upper mounts.

Also, the newer consolette weighs a LOT - not something I want to bolt to a bass drum,

especially a vintage three ply.

I have a newer downbeat-size kit that I wanted to retrofit with an older consolette

in place of the newer style. No dice.

If you want the difference in dimensions of mounting holes of the two, I can

measure and post.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply guys.. I kinda had the feeling it wouldn't, but it was worth asking.. Maybe i should just look for a 70's blue/olive with diamond plate mount, as i have two in mint condition !..If not, there's always the snare stand..It's just that it would be more gear to lug around, which after 20 years of solid gigging, and gigging almost every wk end, i'm getting pretty tired of.. But maybe that's just the older guy in me talking ;))

I actually had an idea that would probably work.. If i bought a new atlas mounting bracket and replaced the top lug where the mount would be in close proximity to, and then mounted an L- arm ride cymbal mount on it, i would probably be able to mount the tom to the cymbal mount, however, my only concern would be constant wobbling, even though the atlas mount is solid, as i have one mounted on my bass drum to mount my ride,, but the ride cymbal is lighter than a tom, especially if it may be a 13" tom.. Anyways, whatever, the case, i'll deal with it once i get to that point..

I like the old rail mounts, they seem to work fine for me, don't even choke the tom for some reason. I use it at gigs where it's just me playing my kit. If other drummers are going to be using it, snare stand it is....

If you want to go that route then it might make more sense just to get the whole Atlas Arch tom mounting setup. I use one on one of my keystone badge bass drums and it works great. The drum was a "virgin" and I didn't want to drill it but also didn't like using a snare stand for the tom. The Arch was the perfect solution.

I agree with K.O. The arch would be the best route to go. IMHO

I'm only posting to say that I have a set of 4 yr old Ludwig Exotic Legacys that are 3 ply w/rings. It came with the newer style consolette like the pic posted by the OP and so far it has handled an hour + daily of playing since I got them (i may have skipped 5 days but not many) without any sign of damage.

While Ludwig was at it you'd think that prior to signing off on the design, the thought to retrofit them to increase sales might have played a part in the process. Though they may be a little bigger than needed, I've yet to have my rack tom do a front or back flip!

Believe it or else!

I have that new Ludwig rail on my Element SE set (a mod orange Downbeat sized set). It works fine but the down side for me is that you can't fold it flat against the bass drum when tearing down. You have to fully remove the upright in order to pack up the drum. The Gibraltar rail has this same issue.

The Atlas Arch can be fully removed although the Atlas iso mounts do stay on the drum and can cause some case fitment issues. Still, between the two, I do prefer the Atlas.
