Downbeat on ebay. Thoughts? Last viewed: 9 minutes ago

What do you think of this? Looks like a rewrap to me - grommet has definitely been removed. Nice looking drum, but my Suspect Alarm is quietly going off. I'm no expert on wraps, but does it look genuine or is it a repro?

Not a bad price I think, considering there's a blue sparkle one that's been up for sale for months, going for $950 (lovely drum but just too rich for me at the moment...).

Wow 1000 $. Drum

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Even though the drum has sold, I'll put in my :2Cents:

While it's obvious that the grommet has been removed, it still looks like it may be original to the drum. The WMP wrap definitely appears to be the style Ludwig used. While Ludwig was famous for applying the wrap to the shell before bending, there are exceptions. This seller has always been upfront on his items and his feedback reflects this. He does mention about the grommet and wrap. Bottom line is that the wrap, badge and grommet look original and the buyer got a good deal!

Yep, it was me. I took a gamble as even though my Suspect Alarm was ringing quietly in my ear, I still had good feelings about it and thought f#@% it, if I don't grab it now I'll probably be waiting a while for anotheree.

I know Ludwig stopped laying wrap in the scarf joint in about '68 I think, and it does look pretty good on this one, even though the grommet has been tampered with.

Thanks for your thoughts and advice, Gentlemen. I'll report back when I receive it, with pics of course.

That wrap looks authentic. It has that certain "patina" that newer wraps lack. Not sure what was up with the grommet but the rest looks pretty authentic...at least in these pictures.

Agreed. I wonder if it the wrap had darkened at one point and someone gave the wrap the de-yellowing process to some extent. It's much easier to do that with that badge off. Would explain what we are seeing the badge/grommet. Just a theory. Very nice looking drum.

I have that snare drum with that exact wrap, and mine yellowed almost identically..

It looks legit to me. Speaking of grommets, mine was slightly damaged when i removed the old wrap, but it wasn't me who damaged it, but the previous owner who idiotically rewrapped it in white cortex wrap..The grommet hole at the interior was pretty shaved and beginning to deteriorate, but i fixed the problem as best i could, with just a little wood filler and some lacquer to protect it from crumbling further. Here's a pic of mine.. Apologies for the lack of toggling.

Is there a way of telling if someone has "de-yellowed" it?

I don't think I'll do a thing to it, but you never know until you have it in your hands, plus anything could happen on the long trip to Oz from Texas! I'm getting excited now, all your comments are very encouraging, thanks Lads!
