I think you guys are getting all bent out of shape over nothing. In my opinion it's still a vintage kit with a makeover. He removed a plastic wrap that's not really sought after and replaced it with a newer plastic wrap. Assuming he didn't re-cut the edges, it would still have the classic 3ply shells with rounded edges which what gives them the sound we all love. It's like having a 1955 T-Bird with a new professionally done paint job, still a classic car, only looks nicer. However, if it were my kit and I chose to re-wrap, I would had picked a color Slingerland actually offered and put the badges and muffles back on.

I couldn't agree more. I'd take the original black wrap in any condition over this re-wrap any day of the week. It's lost all of it's original charm.

I thought the point of owning vintage drums, whether to play or display, was to keep them "vintage", within reasonable and practical bounds. I have no problem with rewrapping, but I would still try to keep them as recognisable as possible. Mr Ringo is right though, IMO - an actual Slingy colour and put the badges back on, at least. Just my two bob....

Why is it not vintage anymore? Do you guys really think a plastic wrap is all that makes a kit vintage? The wrap is just for looks, it's what's under the wrap that matters. The aging of the wood, the construction, the sound, that cannot be duplicated. It's not like he took all the hardware off and put it on new Keller shells to make it look like a vintage Slingerland.

It's not that it isn't vintage - however. Let's say this guy sells his kit at some point. If he doesn't tell someone what it is no one will know. These may find themselves lost to the ages or discarded. They went from a 100% complete kit ( with no damage ) collector quality kit to a player. Would you take anything that is collector quality and drop the grade?

But I agree as well that he could have chosen a color more period correct, and certainly should have placed the badges back on.

I sympathize with your point ARCH. If it's a really nice kit, seems a shame to wrap it. I have to say though, where did he get that wrap? Pretty cool looking stuff. As to jc's comment on black drums and cars; you're breaking my heart man! LoL

that to me looks like a Bum Wrap covering, that means the original wrap may still be underneath. their wrap is designed to go over the original and is only joined to itself at the seam. I have used their wrap and did mine that way, so no real harm done if that's what the guy did
