Drouyn drums - history of Last viewed: 3 hours ago

From Paul Speter

Hi, I have a couple of pics of me sitting at a restored Drouyn kit I bought 80/90's second hand of course, if your interested. Used to love seeing Johnny Dick et al's play their Drouyn's in the 60/70's. As an aside, A French polisher advised me to restore the wood with a mix of Linseed oil and turps, initially daily then tapering off to a couple of times a year. Something I've done with all my kits new and otherwise. Works a treat re enhancing the sound and the look of the plys. If you want the pics let me know and how! cheers, Paul

I think we certainly need to see any pics you have pleaseCool1

I'm visiting Brisbane at the moment and connected with another drummer friend of a cousin. He mentioned that the Drum Cartel in town has some Drouyn drums. They are in the phone book here, and here is a website for them aswell. Pics of a warehouse of sets. They restore and provide backline special requests I believe. Hope to get a tour when I return from Sydney and can post some pic then maybe.

I was actually out at a gig at the Sandringham Hotel in Newtown, Sydney on Sunday and the drummer (who I discovered used to play in one of the band's I'm now in) had a set of Drouyns there. 13", 16" and 22" in a tiger's eye kind of wrap with a Supra snare.

A very nice looking kit which sounded pretty good in the small room (unmiked). The owner said the tom mount was starting to crack up a bit which seems fair for a mid-60s kit.

What he also pointed out (and I'm not sure if this has been noted elsewhere) is that the lugs were originally made from smelted down de-commissioned cannon shell canisters from the army. As in my experience, these were usually brass, that seems to make sense.

The other oddity was that the 16" floor had nine (9) lugs top and bottom which means getting replacement rims is nigh on impossible.

Hi all,

Not sure if anyone will actually read this but I'm a brisbane drummer and learnt drums in the early seventies at Drouyns. My dad was in the Qld Symphony Orchestra and knew Dennis and Lois Drouyn very well, (as Drouyn also made woodwind instruments). Anyway, I remember going thru the old factory out the back with George, (the drum maker), in his big apron and going upstairs to learn off a beaut drummer named Peter Hudson, (he's up the North Coast now).

I'm actually going to, in the next few days pick up an original Dandy kit in Black Marine Pearl, in....wait for it.....excellent, untouched condition. It still has all the dampeners and Bass drum Roller dampeners in them. I hope to have them by next week and can't wait. I will post pics as soon as.

BTW, it's my first post so be gentle....

Cheers

Nice/rare kit!

Lots of BDP fans on here........myself included.......

Wait till you polish the shells with plastic polish.......they will "pop"!
