Drum Cases Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Dear All,

I have a late 1960's Sonor kit (teardrop lugs).

The floor tom is 16" x 16". The tom legs fit into a chrome holder that sticks out approximately 2 inches from the shell. I'm trying to find hard cases that will fit this floor tom. I would like to get SKB cases, but I'm not sure what size will work.

Any suggestions on sizing? I need to protect this beautiful drum.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Take the legs out

Hi Lucky,

The chrome leg holders (not the legs) are the bulky items that stick out, making the drum too fat for a 16 x 16 case.

I would imagine it would fit fine in a 16x18 case. If you are concerned about the slop at the top of the drum, add a ring of 1/2" foam to the perimeter of the bottom half of the case and then put the drum in upside down. Floor toms should generally go upside down anyway so you are not fighting with the leg mounts all the way in and all the way out.

By the way, the SKB roto-molded cases are pretty nice

I just measured my SKB RotoMold case for my 16" X 16" FT and it is about 18.5" wide, not counting the padding. FYI.

Don't forget that the case has a flat side that may accomodate the lugs on one side.

My kit:
Ludwig Vistalite Big Beat set consisting of:
14” X 22” bass, 16” X 16” floor tom, 8” X 12” ride tom, 9” X 13” ride tom, 5” X 14” snare
Ludwig 201 Speed King bass drum pedal
Ludwig 1124 Spur-lok hit-hat with Ludwig Standard Paiste 14” cymbals (760 & 770 gr) with ching-ring
Two Ludwig Standard S-270 cymbals stands
18” Zildjian crash cymbal (1550 gr) and 20” Zildjian ride cymbal (2130 gr) with CAMCO sizzler

Take the legs out and place the drum with a leg mount in the corner of the case. That might work?

16x16 case.

Man, been lugging around a 16x16 in an 18" way too long.

Toss the legs in the trap case....
