Maybe an early Gretsch. Pre rocket lug. They had tube lugs and used this 3pt. American version throw off. No chubby Slingerland collar hooks too.

Let me pull out the 36 Gretsch counter catalog and see where the grommet is on the wood 8 lug model. Gimme a few for a scan...

In the new Gretsch Book... all the wood snare drums listed in the 30's look to be 3 ply. This is one ply.... ?

If it is one ply then I'd say Slingerland with a Friday late afternoon or Monday morning placed grommet. The renown doesn't make reference to the shell construction. If there was a small square that said something like "Gretsch All American" missing from one of the panels then I'd say 36 Gretsch from the scans that are to follow. Not sure if the Grestch square would of had 4 pin holes or if it was just a decal. So there may be no evidence of pin holes if not glue residue. Narrowing it down just a bit. The one scan shows the throw off and the other the 8 lug pearl model. Can't see where the grommet lies but over the butt would work because there was no round badge yet to go on it. Just the square gretsch logo mentioned earlier. Other than this I don't know!!! Scans:

The bend in the hoop snare gate under the throw off looks like the Gretsch renown on your drum. Sure it's a solid shell? If so then maybe an earlier Gretch counter catalog would show an 8 lug model with your throw off and a solid shell with a different catalog name.

The drum is single ply. Measured the depth.. a tad over 4 3/4 inches. Who knows, maybe it was a custom built drum and not a company made drum?

I am stubborn and still think it is a Gretsch early 1930s snare drum.

We just need somebody to validate that the grommet placement is where Gretsch would of put it from that era.

The parts all match. Hoops, throw off, tension rods and clips...

I think it's a Carlton. The #967 (three point strainer) with the diamond cutout would be much later.

From cooper

I think it's a Carlton. The #967 (three point strainer) with the diamond cutout would be much later.

Thanks for your time on this guys!!

Cooper, I see that Carlton offered a one ply shell and placement of the vent over the butt plate. My strainer has no markings that I can find.

I see one catalog scan here on the site. Where would you approx date this drum? Thanks again for your information, there is always something new to learn.

Cooper, Thanks for easing my mind about this drum. You are the man! I guess the following attached 3pt back marked was only used on NJ Rogers or USA made drums to tell that it wasn't a Slingerland. Thought that grommet placement would be a "tell" to this drum. You rock!

Thanks! Apparently, not all of the three point strainers were stamped on the back. The one on the Carlton drum in the photo has no markings. It does have a solid shell but I think it's made from some other wood than maple. Beech or oak, maybe?
