Drum lacquer question Last viewed: 9 hours ago

Loading...

Hi, does anybody know of somebody who could lacquer a drum? Im wanting to do copper mist, with a nitrocellulose lacquer. If I were to take this to a car paint specialist, what would I tell him? Such as water based, oil based, a primer, etc. I see the name Jack Lawton a lot when people talk of restoring there drums. Would he be able to do this? Thanks, any info would be great.

I called Jack Lawton earlier today, his wife said they dont do lacquer. You are getting a copper mist from a body shop? Id love to see either way. Thanks

[Attachment: 62167] pics are not the best but when the other shells are finished i will post. see sample of color next to original

No what i was trying to say is if you have a drum with the original finish you can bring it to a body shop and they could computer match the color . that's if they are willing to do so. In my case i had "ice blue" matched and they are in the process of painting some additional shells to match. i will get a picture up shortly.

Looking forward to seeing those pics!

If its a solid color or a stain then I can help you. We can match any color as long as you have a drum to match to.

Copper mist is a finish of gretsch drums from the 50s to early 60s? Dont know the exact years it was offered. Ive heard of different ways it was done. Put on the shell with a clear wrap over it, put on a wrap then wrapped, or no wrap just straight on the drum. Im not a big fan of Elvis, but his drummer Dj Fontana had a gretsch copper mist. Im a big fan of the drumset. I do not have any copper mist drums, I dont want to jinx it, but I should have a gretsch bop kit that was stripped of its wrap, coming in the mail soon. Jc cabinets, do you do such things? Its a 4 pc stripped of wrap that I was maybe going to do up in copper mist. Are you able to work with nitrocellulose? If you google gretsch copper mist it would come up. Theres a new version, that looks different to my eyes than the org. version. Perhaps its the fade to the older ones. Take a look, let me know what you think. Thanks everybody.
