Drum lacquer question Last viewed: 1 second ago

Yes Ircollra that does look very nice!

Keithfox, I took a quick look at the copper mist. It apperas to be a solid color but kinda satin with like a semi gloss clear coat over it. I can use nitrocellulose laq if you want but that is old school product, its the cheep stuff. If it were mine I would use a post cat conversion varnish that would be tough as nails, well almost.

When I get more time I will look at the copper mist closer. If its like a metalic or something then you might be better off with a body shop. I can buy flakes that go into the paint that will result in a metalic finish but we cant get them in custom colors. They do have a copper flake, I have some on the shelf. Its from www.paintwithpearl.com

I know my paint guy can match it perfect if it is just a solid color.

How far from Illinois are you?

Thank you!

Thanks man ! i will post the whole kit when it is done.

my next project will most likely be similar to what you want do, I think what i will do is pick an automotive finish " like copper mist 'and see what the sample looks like, If i am not mistaken i believe Cadillac had some models in a a similar finish.

Yes, this is a metallic finish. Ive seen oldsmobile, I think, used this exact color. Or pretty close. I had a kit I was going to do this with about a year ago, but never did. Somebody sent me a oldsmobile catalog pic from the 50s that looked to be it. But I cant find it now. JC, reranch sells 16oz spray cans. Would this work, or do you have a sprayer you use? Take a look at reranch.com. Thanks

Found it. 1960 oldsmobile, copper mist metallic, color code 60s. Now does anybody who has a copper mist know if thats close to the look? I havent received the kit yet, should be in tom. I spent a lot of money bidding on this. Its a 66 or 67 gretsch 18 12 14 5.5 stripped of wrap, except the snare, which looks to be tangerine? possibly red sparkle. Most people would think I was crazy bidding what I did on stripped kit that needs work, but the shells looked good without any extra holes, tags present. Its been my dream to get a 18 inch gretsch, I was watching the burgundy 3 pc about 2 wks ago. I was crushed when I saw the final bid had reached close to 12 grand. I pretty much lost hope in being able to afford one after that. Then this came up so I went for it. So now, if everything is as it should be when it arrives, I will have what Ive obsessed over and be able to have it in one of my fav. colors. Im willing to spend the money to get a top notch job done on it. I want to make sure I get everything right. I really appreciate all the help, and all advice/opinions are greatly appreciated as well. thanks, let me know what you think.

Lots of sanding & prep work will save u labor if you can do it yourself. Then pay someone to spray the shells with high quality automotive finish in a spray booth under ideal conditions .

Keith, sounds like you have some bucks in these drums already. I'm not sure if I'm the guy to do this job. We just don't do metallic finishes on or cabinets. I could make these shells look very very nice using the products that I am familiar with. I could even do a metallic finish but as I said earlier the metal flakes might not be the right color. What condition are the shells in, are they good enough for a stain?

I saw the spray paint from the link you provided. Don't do it. One problem you have is the fact that you do not have a drum for anyone to match to. If you did then an automotive paint store could get you what you want. If I were you I would certainly not get into a hurry on this, take your time and think about it. You might want something entirely different next month. But if you do stick with the copper mist then I'm sure someone would know what to do eventually.

Good luck!

Thank you!

JC is right take your time and think about what color you want and start searching for an autobody shop that can shoot a few samples

By the way, I dont think its weird at all to buy a drum kit with wrap removed. Heck, I look for those all the time and Round badge kit is on my hunt list.

Thank you!

One guy who will DEFINATELY do it right:

Bernie Stone at stonecustomdrum.com .

He did Neil Peart's red Tama kit, kits for Kenny Aronoff, Mick Brown, and many others.

Incidentally, he also uses Slingerland's actual original shell-making machinery.

Can't say enough good about that guy.

If you talk to him, please tell 'im Sammy said, 'Howdy!".
