Some of you may disagree, but I see nothing wrong with spraying/hand slathering a drum set in one fell swoop with a paint of my choice. Efficiency experts may agree that 5 minutes per drum set is an appropriate time. Shell. hardware, heads, brackets need not be separated. If the bottom head is off, that's even better to get inside for a uniform effect. Red sparkle, Gold, BDP, Ringo, ..who cares ?

Quicker just to dip'em in a big bucket...

You know what? I see different colored flecks under that black goop... my $ says that the black paint is covering psych-red! Some guys thought it was ugly and they painted over it. Last year, I found an early 60's Rogers Mardi Gras finish under three coats of black paint. The paint served to preserve the finish! When I got the paint off, they were beautiful.
Maybe the same deal here... rare finish, who knows? To me, painted vintage kits are like a locked safe is to the guys who buy storage lockers on TV ... I just gotta see what's in there! (Under the paint)

Oh, the atrocities we committed before our drums were vintage, when we didn't dream they'd one day be "collectables", and paint and contact paper were cheap and readily available.
So if you're going to spray the whole set black, hardware and all, why skip the cymbals?
Where have you been-you can get cymbals painted already-Burger Kin
Mchair303, you are so right. In 1980, at 15 years old, I had a late 60's 6 piece Ludwig Psychedelic Red set. Ugliest thing in the world to me at the time. Then I saw Alex Van Halen's black and white striped set on the "Diver Down" album. Guess what I did to those drums. When it turned out like crap, I took it to the music store and had it recovered in a gloss red and had Pearl Tom mounts put on. The guilt only grows.

You never know what might be lurking under black spray paint.
Thanks to everyone who went along with my humor. But underlying this post is a desire to find some sure way to revive some nice drums. I've accumulated quite a few instruments over the years that are painted over wrap. I can see finishes peeking through,.. Red sparkle, Gold, Psych Red, Blue sparkle & more. I've read most of the archived information, but am still pondering what's best. (I 've had bad experiences w/ acetone).
Work with the Eco Friendly paint removers (citrus based). It will require more elbow grease (done gently) but it can be done. Hardware can just be dropped in a stripping solvent.
