drumstick tip shape affects the rebound? Last viewed: 6 hours ago

This is a question primarily directed to Purdie Shuffle. It does however pertain to the question of drumstick tips.

John, is it true that Bernard Purdie "shaved" the tips of his sticks to what amounts to a rounded point in order to attain the sound he was after?

This is a very interesting post. I have a pair of Mr. Purdie's sticks (at least the seller assured me that they were) and they are light and indeed almost pointed. Of course, assurances can mean very little without absolute documentation.

Brian - I heard the same story but I don't know how true it is. I know that Purdie relies heavily on buzz roll accents and pecked, or buzzed ghost notes. That means he's using rebound and a lighter, thinner, narrow at the neck, stick with a long taper coming to a small bead. A stick like that will bounce better than a heavier, thicker at the neck stick will. It's just physics.

Many years ago I was taught a trick: Pull off nylon tips & sand the sticks down to a point, for very quiet playing.

They also come in handy when your singer wants to rest his boot on your bass drum :D

The sticks that I play now are Promark CP "Carl Palmer" sticks. I feel that they have lots of rebound, well just good for me. They are the right thickness, and weight.

The only thing that I don't like about the sticks is that they have that "long" thin tip: "arrow head" I think it's called.

I wan't to have these exact sticks but with a "round tip".

For example like the tip of the Promark L808 (Ian Paice sign.) sticks.

Do you guys know how I can get such a pair of sticks?

CP (stick) and L808 (tip)
