Matt - Sure there is! You can get Bamboo sticks, Sugar Maple sticks, all kinds of different materials including Carbon and Aluminum. Google it. :p

Matt - I don't think you're going to find any drum sticks made of softwoods. What specifically is the problem you're having?

Sugar maple sticks are the lightest I've found, vater do some, and they have a nice soft feel in the hands.

The reason I'm asking for specifics is; impact injuries to the hands from playing are more often than not the symptom of a problem with improper grip. If you can detail what the problem is, a solution will not be far behind.

Yep - I almost always rimshot the snare, but by the time the stick hits, I'm practically not even holding on to it. You kind of let go, just before impact, grab it afterwards.

Alternately, I'm pretty sure the sticks I used for years were maple, or some wood softer than what I'm using now...

The main problemo is I am playing in bands were I can not play my normal kinda hard way.No amps to speak of so I don't want to overshadow the rest of the guys.It is hard for me to play SOFTLY So I look for ways to keep it quite. Hot Rods are ok but I want to play sticks,so thought there was something out there besides hickory. I heard a guy with a Paiste 20" Innovation ride that was perfect. I bought one only to find out that Paiste makes a MEDIUM ride.I bought the heavy ride The sound is totally different .I have a NEW CYMBAL that I don't want,,, any takers?? It will kick ass in a rock band for sure!!!trades ???ANYTHING!! Thanks for all of the help,Matt

I know where your coming from here, it can be tricky when your used to playing harder and louder to suddenly be expected to play lighter, using lighter sticks is your starting point in achieving this though.
