I played them back in the day. We were in to the "dead" sound of snares.

I picked one up not long ago and put it on a snare for nostalgic reasons.

WHAT WERE WE THINKING! DAMN!

Drummers tried them, at the time they were a new head... and then never bought them again. I wouldn't get too nostalgic about this head being "the choice" of your dad. Perhaps he was just "trying them out". They do not bring out the best in a drum.

My impression of them is less negative than that of previous reviewers. I have been using them over the years on various drums with overall good results. The Duraline Concert Snare Side head is excellent for its stated purpose, very dependable on the road against dents and punctures - possibly superior to mylar snare side heads. The Duraline Concert batter head, accurately tensioned, has great projection, acceptably good overall sound, but the kevlar bulletproof vest material feels like a brick wall when playing on it. Duraline Studio Series heads, corresponding in concept to Remo CS heads, have thin mylar discs centered on the underside of the heads, which (again similar to the Remo CS) does actually center the tone frequency while reducing overtones. I've used them as resonator side tom heads with excellent results. The bass drum heads so far haven't worked as single heads for me, although they are designed to be used on bass drums in pairs on batter and resonator sides without internal muffling. Years ago B.B. King's drummer praised them for their projection and absence of overtones without his having to use pillows or stuffing inside his drum. Duraline's inventor, Sam Muchnik, was quite the entrepreneur - he gave us the first Kevlar heads, Kevlar sticks, and other percussion products. The Duraline company didn't survive but the use of Kevlar material is employed throughout the modern drum head industry in the manufacture of high intensity drum heads.
