DW Flat Base Boom Stand Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Hi guys - A while back I bought three DW flat base stands, which I've been very happy with. Sturdy, light weight and a simple clean vintage look. The only complaint I have with any flat base is (for me) the positioning of the ride cymbal, as I like it in front of me over the bass drum. I decided to pop for a boom in the same series and it just arrived. It makes a huge difference playability-wise. The bonus is that the look of it is streamlined and not too bulky and modern (it's a very short arm). Just thought I'd share that for anyone else thinking along those lines.

I've been thinking about getting those stands too. Thanks for the input. I just worry about the legs getting in the way when you have more than 3 cymbals.

Gary,

I bought a combination of the DW and Gibraltar flat base hardware. I purchased two boom stands for this exact reason. Normally I fly my rack tom off of a standard snare stand just to place the legs over the flat base stands. I have gigged the heck out of them and beat them up in my hardware case. No issues at all. Only thing is playing outdoor really windy gigs I have to hold the feet down with some gaffer tape or weights. Cymbals tend to act like mini sails in those situations.

How about the Hi-Hat, anyone have a flat based hi-hat? I'm wondering how well it works. Also does it pack up small? I bought that new Gibraltar collapsing hat stand but it's not great.

The legs are designed to overlap. They have rubber feet that can be reversed to that the stand will go over adjacent flat-base legs, no problem. Also, there's a plastic spacer that works kind of like a memory lock, and it stops the adjustment to keep the legs horizontal, however, if you happen to need that extra bit of height, then take the plastic spacer off, and the legs will pyramid up another inch or so to easily go overtop any obstructions.

Thanks for that tip, Rik. Overlapping the legs makes them even better!

I love them. I had a whole set of 9000 stands, they were sturdy as a tank, held solid, but created two additional trips. I now have all DW 6000 stands, except for the 3000 BD and HH. I can get my entire drum set moved in three trips, and it fits easily in my small car.

Yep, nice stands.

They "look" the part and they are sturdy.

The Gibraltar flat base stand leaves a lot to be desired. It's certainly gig worthy (at least the previous model and not the newer one) and holds up well. I have also played the newer Gibralter flat base hi hat and was not impressed. The new DW flat base hi hat (6500) stand is amazing.
