I'm no Rogers Dynasonic expert, but it is my understanding that the Dyna's shell does not have any snare beds. The idea of the frame was to alleviate the need for them. Therefore, I would think that, if you really want the Dynasonic sound, then you must have all the correct pieces. I think the frames are usually very expensive nowadays.

Edit: Also, I think there were variations of that frame over the years, too.

Al Drew Music did buy out all the old Rogers stock, so I would bet that those are just as good as the originals.

The Dynasonic did have snare beds. .oo4" so..... thats super, super shallow. All Dynasonic snare drums came with the frame. One of the best drums ever.

The snare beds on the Dynasonic are very small, and don't really work well without the frame. That's not to say the drum would necessarily sound bad, it just wouldn't really have the Dynasonic sound. I bought mine without the frame, too, but I bought a replica frame for about $90 (until I find the appropriate one for my #211X -- anyone?), and use the Puresound wires. Everything works great. I still haven't figured out the ideal settings for this drum, but that certainly has nothing to do with the replica rail.

Being that I play Rogers Dynasonic snare drums pretty much exclusively, and the fact that I have four of them, a 1966 WMP... 1967 WMP... 1964 COB... and a 1965 COB... I would have to say that I know this model snare drum pretty well! I wrote a "set-up guide" for the Dynasonic snare drum that a lot of guys have had excellent success with... it will get your drum in the right area and allow YOU to fine tune/tweak the drum to your tastes. Dynasonics can be, and often are... finicky. But!... once in the proper area... what a drum. I also want to mention that they never sound good without the frame. There are beds, but as you know, they are miniscule... aprox. .004". Thus, without the snare frame, all you have is a GIANT buzz bomb... unless the drummer tensions the snot out of the snares, to stop the buzzing of course!... but all that does is buckle the shell behind the throw-off on a COB model, and completely choke the wood model... neither sound good at all. Anyway...

In theory... you could get the drum set up and working with a regular ten hole bottom hoop... BUT! ... you would have to remove a portion of the hoop and open the snare gates so that the frame/snares could be raised and lowered without obstruction as the frame is long enough where it will hit otherwise. Then of course you have NO PROTECTION for the frame itself as you don't have the guards on the bottom... but again... if you wanted to just get it up and running, you could certainly modify a bottom 10 hole hoop by REMOVING the bottom portion of the snare gate. I still say grab the hoop that you need as it is still on eBay, and in a friendly area price wise. You really do want the drum all together and correctly at that if possible!
