once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I guess I was lucky, my first snare drum was a Rogers Dynasonic. It did take me a while to learn it, but I did, although there were times in that first year I thought about taking the frame off the drum and getting regular wires. I still have that 1977 COB Dyna I got in 1979, and proudly...... there is no dent behind the throw off. This drum still has its original epoxied wires, which are in excellent shape.

Gotta Say,

For around 12 years a 6.5 '78-'79 Dynasonic was my only snare. I picked it up at a very good (Duty Free) price in Noumea whilst playing on the cruise ships. I do not recall any issues after the initial set up of the strainer. I worked it hard with rock & country-rock bands and it always sounded good (nice & thick).

Only thing.. one night a 1/2" triangle of batter rim just flew off it.

(must have been a previously un-noticed hairline crack finally calling it quits).

Guess I was lucky too.

Cheers

Powertone!...ALWAYS liked the English Rogers Dynasonics! They were just a little "different" in their appearance so they made one look twice! The one you have shown here.. ( like ALL your fine Rogers specimens! ) .. is just stunning. SUPERB! The fact that it is also an excellent player makes it even MORE superb! I have a 1966 COB 7 line Dynasonic that also plays/sounds really good. As a matter of fact, that was the drum I played the most until I found the 1965 Powertone in WMP.. then .. the 1967 WMP Dynasonic... and that was it for me!Strictly out of my personal curiosity: Do you have a build year on your English Rogers COB/7 line Dynasonic? 60's for sure of course!... but curious as to what year. BEAUTIFUL DRUM Powertone! Almost like J E W E L R Y!!!!!! :-)Tommyp

Tommy - thanks for your comments. I played this drum from 1968 up until I started getting into collecting in the mid 90's. It was my one and only snare drum. I must have taken care of it as it still looks like the day I picked it up all those years ago.

I don't have a build year on the drum. I obtained it in 1968. It is very interesting in that the drum has tall hoops and a first generation snare frame. I originally thought it was made of Rogers parts sent to England, but have since found out that many of the parts, including the shell, were actually manufactured in England. However, I believe the 1 st generation snare frame was probably manufactured here and sent over. The handful of beavertail English built dynas I have seen have had these frames.

The interesting thing is that I obtained this drum from someone in the upper ranks of Rogers when I purchased a kit from him in Covington back in 1968. I can only speculate that the drum had been sent to him (or the factory) as an example of what they were building across the "pond".

I have a dyna from 1970. All this talk is gonna make me pull mine out and start working with it. I remember playing in the high school band(86'). We had two dynas, probably early 60's models. They sounded so rich, clean and articulate that I knew i had to grab one someday. I do think they can be an awesome drum but just like a tama kb you have to put in a little time.

Great thread! I have a couple Dyna's, favorite being the 1968 (11XXX) five liner. Talked about this drum before on here, cracked a lot of vintage drums in my time & know when one's been mucked with, this one looked untouched as far as hardware goes. The strange thing about this drum is the throw, had a couple guys on sleezeBay tell me that the strainer was not correct (so I pulled it) and the "D" stamp on the strainer is upside down...the font (or typeface) of the "D" is also different. Wondering if anyones seen this before, you guys that responded before can just ignore this. Just wondering, the drum is amazing, but sadly is on the block for sale. Generating funds to finish a kit for the Chicago Show & this has been setting in the loft for months.

Anyway, would like to know if anyone out there has seen this before or is it just some crafty forger that's managed to fool me. Really doesn't make sense though, everything else was present & correct...why forge the damn "D"?

fungus amungus!...

( always amuses me to type that! ) Anyway... the upside down "D" on the strainer happened quite often on the Dynasonic. I have seen MANY. The strainer is correct!

What started to be thread on general differences that I've noted on my Dynasonics has turned into an interesting thread. I never meant to say that the Dynasonic is better, just show the differences that I've seen in mine.

Truth be told, I don't play mine as much as I used to for fear of them getting hurt or stolen. I play them at home only.

I am in the quest for a wood Dyna of a certain type (Tommyp knows of what I speak) but for now I'm trying to raise some funds.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Thanks Tommy! I guess anyone that post a Dyna on the Bay has to deal with the 20 Billion Rogers experts/fanatics out there picking their drums apart & trying to lowball the auction for personal gain. My guess is that some of these are the evil "dismantlers" looking for another victim for their chop-shops. It is very tiring! I know a clean vintage when I crack it for cleaning & this one was clean!...I also know that there are talented forgers out there. This one just didn't make sense, if you're good enough to make this look untouched, why the hell would you leave the "D" upside down. Plus, the guy I bought it from never even mentioned it.

Thanks again Tommy...I knew the answer, just wanted an expert to back it up!
