Dynasonic with No Bridge Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I'm sure this has been posted before but I couldn't find it.

Obviously many of the Dynasonic snare cradle/bridges have seen better days and I never did have patience to really mess with them. That said there's a few Dynas with no bridge in my price range ($200 or less) locally. A few people have told me they play them just fine without frames and others have said it'll buzz like hell and there's basically no snare bed. Anyone have any experience with this? Without the frame, are they essentially a COB Powertone with 10 lugs?

Been in the market for a vintage COB to alternate with my gretsch 4160 and Slingerland Krupas, Powertones and frameless Dynasonics seem to fall in my price range. Hate the Zoomatic strainer (but love Krupa snares), Powertone wasn't my thing, so I ask.

Without the frame a Dyna isn't a Dyna. They become just another cob snare. I have two of them and have played them without the frame they sound ok but correctly setup with the frame they are a whole different drum and well worth the effort.

If you decide to go that route, at least outfit the drum with a Rhythm Tech wire set. There's not enough bed for a standard set, and the drum's response will suffer.

Agree.... but I'ld say "just another beautiful COB".....

The Dyna has virtually no snare beds (something like 4/1000th of an inch), so it really wasn't designed to be used without the snare frame. The Rhythm Tech snare frame is a poor substitute for the Rogers frame as it has no snare tensioning adjustment, but it can sometimes be your only option until you can procure a Rogers frame. Keep in mind that when you do finally find a Rogers frame, if it doesn't come complete with the correct snare wire set, it is going to be very difficult finding replacement snares.

Thanks for the feedback, that helps. I need a COB I can gig and record with (and bump around a bit) that isn't gonna incur too much cost to set up and maintain. May have to just get another 4160 and call it even, though one of the sellers was cool enough to let me try the Dyna out at a nearby rehearsal w/o frame and see how I like it.

The one I used to have sounded hideous without the frame ( buzzing). No matter what I did even with the frame it still buzzed.

I would spend just a bit more and get a COB Powertone. They are readily available, reasonably priced, easy to maintain, and more importantly, they sound great. I've had a 4160....

I actually had a Dayton COB Powertone for two years. Got it for $60 on eBay and got some use out of it, but never liked it the way I did the 4160 or the Sound King, even with various head combos. Sturdy, idiot proof, good strainer, solid, quality drum (typical of most 60s Rogers) but a $200 offer was enough for me to part with it. I asked if the Dyna w/o frame was a similar snare with the exception of the extra 2 lugs because I'm familiar with the Powertone sound as a starting point. The majority rules here and I'll probably hold out for something different. In a fair world I'd find a scratched up but functional SlingerLeedy Manne COB for a decent price…essentially a Sound King without that Zoomatic headache.
