Early 60's Supraphonic!!! Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

I posted here about a month ago about me putting a pre serial-supra on layaway at guitar center due to the 30 day police hold. It was in the original case, had a wfl stand, and was in great condition. It was only $250! I'm starting to have faith in guitar center again!

I finally got it out of layaway today and I think it might be a COB! I think it has all the signs of a COB but there's people on here that have been dealing with Vintage drums A LOT longer than I have.

- Passed the magnet test. (Did not stick! with thin and powerful mags)

- Has the bent in snare beds

- weighs 10 pounds (including everything lugs, rims, skins etc.)

- Very Very little pitting

- baseball bat muffler

- original snares (but bent)

- no serial #'s on keystone

Questions:

What should I use to polish up the shell and lugs? I was thinking chrome polish with very soft cloth.

What snares should I use with these? Originals are bent (might put a book em to straighten em out) Puresound Brass 20 strand?

Whats with supraphonic 400? 402? What do these numbers mean?

Is the WFL stand what this originally came with? I thought wfl was only through the late 50's

Thank you!!!

beautiful snare either way!

many pre serials with crimped snare beds are cob. some are not. the bearing edges of the drum should roll in towards the inside of the shell. my eyes arent good enough to tell by the pic. a cob shell would usually have zero pitting however. the magnet test on the shell doesn't tell anything. if the shell wasnt brass, it would be ludalloy(aluminum). mangnet doesn't stick to it either. the 5 inch supra is a 400. the 6.5 supra is a 402. many drums through the mid 60's still had wfl carryover parts. thats the snare stand that i would expect to see with that drum. nice score! anything non abrasive will be fine for polishing.

Yeah the edges seem to roll in towards the shell so hopefully it is a COB. I can't wait to clean it up and make it sing.

If it weighs 10 lbs, then you've no doubt got yourself a COB snare -- and at what an amazing price!

I agree with Galaxy...I think you just scored yourself a COB at a Ludalloy price! Good job!
