I hope everyone is having a blessed Easter. I just finished an event for a church that puts on their Easter service in an arena...for two days. For the musical special, they included four drummers onstage playing marching drums. The drums in question were 1964 Slingerland 16 x 16 (I think) with wire snares. They were originally gold sparkle that had evenly faded to a light gold/ginger ale. Stick saver hoops, drum key holder, leg rest and Zoomatic strainers. Clear interiors and Black/gold Niles badges. Other than the fade, all four were pristine. I asked about them and was told they came from Vanderbilt University and were restored by Sam Bacco. Really nice. I wish I had gotten a photo of all four of them.

Wow thats cool! Never new they made a 16x16 snare, that would be a moose to march with.

Other than dealing with the high stepping technique typical of that marching era, these drums were quite light. Typical three ply with re-rings. They were tuned fairly low with a felt strip on the batter and wire snares that ran directly into the butt plate.

The High School in the tiny little town I grew up in had a couple of these huge old snares in the back room when I was a Freshman. The school had already purchased new Ludwig field snares (I assume 12 X 15, it's been a while...) and the huge 16 X 16 field snares disappeared soon afterward. I have no idea who made the big 16 X 16's. I don't think I ever took that much interest in them to find out. All I know is that the new ones were bad enough on your knees, I didn't feel like lugging around a near conga in a couple mile parade.
I'll bet they sound marvelous though!
