Evans Black Chrome heads Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Has anyone tried these relatively new heads by Evans on their vintage kits? I guess it's a two ply head, one 7mm clear with a 7.5mm black head on the bottom. They seem to sound great on newer kits, but not sure what they do for the old 3 ply shells.

Also, if anyone has tried the G-plus heads for the resonent side on a vintage kit, what did you think of them?

Thanks in advance. ( I tried a search, but it comes up with every post with the words black and chrome. :)

Two weeks ago, I installed the Evan's Black Chrome on my 15 inch marching snare. I use this vintage Star as my main snare drum and play at least once a week. This head is just what I wanted! We play original tunes with a strong simple beat for the most part. The snare with this new head thunders when properly tuned! For the type of music we play,I much prefer it over the previous Remo.

Thanks Brian. I think I'll try one on my rack tom to get a bigger sound out of it.

Hi, vbb,

To me that sounds like a good idea. I don't know what kind of music you play but, this head might be a bit "heavy" if you play jazz or pop oriented songs. For good ol' rock, I really like it! Actually, my bass player suggested that I replace all of my heads with these models. I just need to win the lotto and I will. Best of luck!

Yeah, they're a little more money than other heads. :)

I just talked to a friend of mine who drums in a couple local bands and he ordered full sets to put on his Sonor kit and his Art-Star kit. I've mixed sound for him many times, so I'm anxious to hear the difference in his drums. I'll update when he gets 'em up and running.

Thanks man.

I put these on my 70 sling rock set, gigged out with it once, brought the roof down, thunder, loud, too bad I'm not in that band anymore, good choice for rock music

Update:

Well, my buddy installed the Black Chrome heads on his 90's Sonor kit, and whoa bessie. Big, thunderous sound. In fact he was able to tune up a bit and still be powerful. They helped tame the ring in his 12x7 rack tom and he has a benefit this weekend, so we'll see how they sound through a PA. He also ordered a set to put on his older Art Star (Birch) kit, and is playing that out the following weekend, so I'll see how that one is too.

So far, he's sold on 'em (especially for playing 'rock' ).

I had a brief encounter with these heads on a set of DW's recently. I was quite impressed and plan on re heading my Sonors with them.
