The Evans G2 clear (batter) and G1 clear (resonant) and Evans EMAD bass batter sound very good on my Gretsch Purewood African Mahogany kit. I also use the Coated G1 and G2 heads - I find the clear heads are better suited for my mahogany shells - tons of tone there.
Evans coated G1 - am I losing my mind? Last viewed: 2 hours ago
Now and then one brand or another doesn't seem the best match for the drums and/or my ears so I'll mix and match. I have no firm preferences re the current brands -- though I sadly have minimal experience with Attack.
Well, I.M.H.O. it's finally just a cuestión of tastes...
I totally agree with many of you about G1 batter.... sounds plastic, saturated of harmonics, not good at all for me.
By the other hand, as have been said, Emad 2 for the BD sounds great, as well the 360 hazy 300 for reso snares.
I have never used Aquarian or Attack until now, though...
On the batter side of snares, I have plenty of Ludwig Medium coated, and this head resume the perfect balance for me, with controlled harmonics, semi-brightness and feel.
Anyway I'm a remo guy, these never disappoint me in any version. WalkingWalking

I think the only Evans head that does it for me is the EMAD. The EMAD gives me the fullest, roundest (is that a word?), bass drum sound ever. I am shy about buying another EMAD at the moment because my cat likes to pull the rings out and play/chew on them... LoLoLoLo
Of course, this is all subjective to the player...
I have tried Evans 360 G2's on my club date kit's 12" rack and 14" floor and I cannot, for the life of me, get a good tuning out of them. They just sound dead to me... at lower-mid tuning the floor tom always has a growl to it. I put Remo Coated Emperors on them and they open up and sound full of tone.
Perhaps the Evans 360 heads may sound fantastic on newer high end drums, but I've always been a Remo fan and will continue to use Remo as that sound works for me.

The G2s are double ply and have always sounded dead to me. They helped me realize that I always prefer single ply.
I have been satisfied with the 360 design before - but this coated G1 on snare is really turning me off of Evans altogether. Aquarian sampling is next, as I never want to be locked into Remo only such that if I see a great deal on the 'other' brand I want to be able to take advantage without being disappointed.

Yes, no doubt that the G2's seem to be way more "controlled" than the Remo Emperors. I even tried a G2 on my 3ply Ludwig 12" tom and it just didn't do it for me. Maybe one day ill try a G1 on a tom or something and see if I like that.

This pretty well sums it up for me too. I picked up a pile of 14" barely used heads yesterday including Evans, Remo & Aquarian and will be switching them out on a Super Ten for my amusement and education. Often times the heads I get through flipping kits surprise me as I wouldn't have bought them logically, but they work.
That said, the Evans G1 has almost never worked for me and most of the time when Evans heads end up on my drums they end up on toms only. Not that I don't keep trying them. I really like EC3s on toms when I need a modern rock sound. Also I have had a lot of success with Evans Onyx on MIJ kits. They seem to inject the "nasty" back into stencil kit toms.
