FIBES Chrome over fiberglass 24x14 Last viewed: 1 day ago

Hey VDF, I've got an interesting fibes item here.

Picked this up a few years ago. It seems like an early prototype of the COF drums, there is no paint on the inside of the shell and some of the mounting hardware looks like old slingerland. The badge seem like one of the earlier designs as well.

Just wondering if anyone had any guess as to the age and value of this drum.

Thinking about selling it, if anyone is interested make an offer, located in WV, close to Pittsburgh.

Thanks - Evan

It's an early badge before they went to Nazareth, late 60's-'72 maybe. Cool that it was custom made, haven't seen that on a fIbes badge, makes you wonder who it was made for. At the time, from what I've read, here ;), you could order a kit with whatever hardware you wanted. Bet it sounds killer

Actually, that's the THIRD generation Fibes badge.. ( there were four different badges before the company was sold to Corder in 1979 ) .. CFMartin ownership, but still NY based on the build, so this drum is 1970 'till approx. 1975. The "custom made" on the badge means nothing special. ALL of the drums were considered "custom made", and every badge in this era reflected that. Interestingly, CFMartin Corp. was always in Nazareth PA, but the badge didn't state that fact 'till 1975 on. Lastly...

... if there were a drum "special ordered" for a national level player, or an actual CUSTOM made drum, a special badge would be affixed to the shell in addition to the regular Fibes badge shown here with that drummer/owners name engraved on it.

You know, I bought my first Fibes kit back in 1973, and played those all the way 'till 1980, and LOVED 'em. They were well built and had a lot of presence. The badge was the badge shown on the drums here, and that's what started me down the Fibes road so to speak. Of course there was also Buddy Rich who MORE than dabbled with Fibes, primarily their snare drums, and as far back as 1966! All of that history collected over the years is how I have a solid timeline down for this company. Of note was that I had the Crystalite shells and NOT the COF, except for the snare drum. I have a 5X14 1966/67 COF 690 prototype/8 lug, and the later full production 5.5X14 SFT 690/COF 10 lug in my Buddy Rich snare drum collection as he played both!

I also had the Crystalite shells in 20, 12, 13 & 16 w/ mixed badges. I REALLY got into them and ended up buying a 22" bass drum and an Austin 14x14 ft, as well as a 5x14 Crystalite snare and a 5.5x14 COF snare. I searched high & lo for a 70's 14x14 to no avail! Even though I sold all my fIbes in 2011 to fund a big motorcycle trip, you can still count me as a fan

Sorry to get a bit off topic here Evan

Evan!

NO WORRIES!, we aren't really "off topic" as hailcaesar1623's question was answered, and we have kept the thread going with additional input. In the spirit of that:

My 1973 Fibes Crystalites were: 20... 12... 16... 5X14 Crystalite snare drum to start, then I added: 22... 13... and TWO white North Drums, an 8" and a 10", and a Fibes SFT 690/COF snare drum set up with Hinger "Touch Tone" snares. Okay, I admit it!... this was during my Billy Cobham phase! I have a pic of this set in my files from a gig we did at Yale in New Haven, CT. I have to go find it, and I'll do a scan and post it up. We had almost the exact same set-up you and I. Great stuff!

Yes, that's very close! For the most part I used the 20, 12, 14 then the 22, 13, 16 for larger venues. With some mixing and matching too

What a MORON!!!! Not you of course... me! I didn't mean to call you Evan. I remembered your name was Gerry from previous conversations we have had, but was referencing Evan's username, and well... you know the rest! Anyway...

... I never gigged my Fibes Crystalites with two bass drums, although I had both a 20 and a 22. I used the 22.. 12.. 13.. 16.. snare, and the two North drums. Will look for that pic!
