Fibes drum score Last viewed: 50 minutes ago

Silver Sparkle will look good... so will WMP. And Green Sparkle. And half-a-dozen others. Yes, I know, I'm a wrap guy.

Jeff, this find of yours with the chrome-metal wrap has inspired me. The weather was great here yesterday and I spent over four hours after I got home from work in my shop with my heat gun and putty knives and removed the chrome-metal wrap from a 6-ply Ludwig floor tom, a couple of Slingerland TDR marching drums, then several drums with shot plastic wrap!

A time consuming, tedious process, but well worth it!

Why don't you let one of your hot rod painter buddies put a large chip metal flake paint job on them. A blue metal flake like a Cobra blue or classic candy apple red. They aren't original anymore...big deal, trick them out with a bad ass paint job like a hot rodder would do. Stay away from flames, been over done. Which would you rather have a fully restored Model T or a street rod based on a Model T? To me there is nothing wrong with hot roddin' a drum set that is too far gone to be restored. Classic WMP is cool but its cool a million times over. A custom paint job is a one of a kind and don't forget to consider your pin striping buddy. A few classic pin stripe shields around the badges would really trick it out. Be bold, think outside the box.

Have you seen Smith Drums paint? Looks beautiful, it has the depth of a wrap but no seam. Don't get me wrong I wrap more drums than paint but since he has access to high quality painters why not use their art. A guy like me who can't paint or know anybody who is a good painter, I wrap drums. I have a friend who owns a body shop and I had him paint a drum set once. It just didn't turn out like I thought it would, but he isn't a custom hot rod painter just a good standard paint guy. jccabinets is going to do what he wants to do. We are here to clutter up his mind with our ideas. jccabinets you are a woodworker, veneer those babies with some exotic wood. Wood over fiberglass, that's unique.

Well yes, my mind is cluttered with lots of things right now. I have considered veneer, it would be less money than wrap but I have done it and would like to try the jaminsams wrap once. I am going to be painting some drums this weekend , purple candy. This will be my first solid color job on drums, so I will see how that goes. Everyone has good ideas here and they all make sense in there on way. WMP is overdone probably but it is beautiful , probably why its overdone. Paint has no seems ( very cool) veneer is easy as pie and I can stain and lacquer them to perfection. One thing that bugs me about the wrap is that the sheets are only 24"x 54", that is so stupid, you cant even wrap a 18" ft without two seems. The veneer is sold in 4'x 8' sheets so only one seem even on a 24" BD.

Thanks for so many responses and ideas. When they are done do I start a new thread under restoring drums or just keep this one going? I will be doing the Fibes next after the purple Pearls. Kind excited, I filled in the hole where the tom mount goes and created a "virgin bass drum" . Boy I have fun aroud here LoLoLoLo

Hey, here's a page from the Fibes 1972 catalog.

Looks like mirror gold, or at least something very close, to me.

Picked up this snare drum on ebay to go with the kit. It is rough shape also. Still no decision on the new wrap but I have a buddy that might get me some aluminum sheeting that could be polished to look like chrome. I am leaning heavily towards getting the chrome wrap look back again. I have been searching for chrome plated sheet metal but no such luck as of today.

Your right. One thing is I am not in a hurry. I am really looking into chrome metal sheeting that will be as close to origional as possible. Otherwise, I found a place that will cut brushed stainless steel ( like you see on appliances now) to the exact size and ship to me for just under 200.00. To good to be true?
