Fibes Drums Last viewed: 1 hour ago

So I get an email from a guy replying to an ad I have on a over 55 community web site. I have bought a couple of sets from these retirees. He tells me he used to work for the original Fibes drum company and he has a couple of sets that might interest me. My drum antenna are already up. So I email him back and tell him that I am interested. His next email gives me a phone number for Bob Gauso's (co-founder of Fibes drums) wife. Now my antenna are really up. I had met Bob a few times and seen him play, so I knew he was local. So I called her to see what she still had. Apparently he had three sets, one went to a student of his and one went to his grandson. So hopefully I will be going to see what she has left, can't wait. When I asked her what set she had she said it was a Buddy Rich Memorial Set. Whatever that means. I know Buddy played Fibes snares but didn't like Fibes drums. So I guess I will know more when I go to her house this Saturday. She said she has a picture in her garage of Bob Buddy and Gene, she said it is more like a banner! I will try to at least take a picture of that.

The other interesting item she was telling me about were some hihats with Gene Krupa etched in it?

That's cool, indeed. Eagier to read your news at the weekend!

I think I have read here somehow about cymbals with Gene Kroupa stamp in it, if I recall correctly. But I can't remember exactly ...

Buddy did play a full Fibes set briefly in the 60's between his Rogers and Slingerland endorsements. It was a chrome set. I think the actual Fibes set he played belongs to Donn Bennett (it was on ebay a year or two ago for like 50 grand but I don't think it sold).

So if the set she has is chrome finish (instead of WMP) that is why.

Zildjian would stamp the initials of some endorsers on cymbals they made for them. I have seen cymbals with the "GK" stamped into the metal that had belonged to Gene Krupa. A friend of mine has a cymbal (bought used at Franks drum shop in 1960) that has the same style of stamp reading "BD" that (we assume) was Barrett Deem's.

For those who haven't seen this vid it's a good one. You'll also see one of the best cymbal catches EVER at around 5:05. Cool1
