Fibes or ? Drum ID please Last viewed: 1 hour ago

These came in a lot of old drums and parts I bought today. Lugs look like Fibes and the interior of the shell is a nice looking maple. Unfortunately they added extra holes into each drum for a mic'ing system and I am not sure if the missing tom mount (looks Tama) is the original whole spacing but I do not see any other holes for tom mounts on any of the drums. I have 3 of these things in power tom sizes 15x13, 13x12 and 14 x13. Any insight would be great!

Thanks Green Glass. What about the shells? There are no badges anywhere. Triple flange hoops, the lugs and shell construction are all I have to go on. I agree the lugs look Fibes but I am wondering if the shells are Fibes or just a custom shell that ended up with Fibes lugs on them.

Could be Corder drums or Fibes. My bet is on Corder though

Were all Fibes Drums Fiberglass?

From skapunk_edge

Were all Fibes Drums Fiberglass?

Depends upon who owned the manufacturing rights and name at the time.

The original Fibes made fiberglass and acrylic drums.

Darwin and Corder used maple shells.

Corder used mostly Jasper maple shells.

Austin Fibes used mostly Jasper maple shells, with some fiberglass and acrylic snares/drum sets.

Original Fibes would be fiberglass or acrylic and also not in those "power" sizes.

To my eye that chrome wrap looks like it's real metal rather than a plastic variety so I'd guess that puts them older and most likely makes them Corders. By the time Darwin bought out Corders the trend in chrome drums had fallen by the wayside and most of what "chrome" was used was plastic by that time. If the wrap is actually plastic then it might be either Corder or Darwin with a very slight chance on the reborn Fibes drums.

Corder bought the Fibes tooling but not the name so the drums look like Fibes but were not named that. They also didn't like all the fiberglass dust they saw around the Fibes production facility and opted to make their drums from wood shells. They used both Keller and Jasper shells. I've heard that the Jasper shells were used primarily for marching drums but I don't know how true that is. At the time I don't think too many people were giving the source of the shells much thought so they probably used them interchangeably.

Corder used metal wrap.

I know because I bought from him to recover my old Fibes kit.

I also have a Corder snare that uses the chrome metal wrap.

Austin Fibes used real metal too,but only on their Fiberglass snares.

As for Corder shells ,I'm pretty sure Jim sourced most of his shells from Jasper.

Just saw this now, so allow me to comment ... before I do though, some good info from our members here! In addition to all of that though...

... there is yet another way to identify what era/manufacturer certain Fibes drums are, and that is by the lugs themselves. The Fibes proprietary diamond shaped lug is of course unique to Fibes, but ... there are some differences. Original Fibes .. 1965 through to the end in 1979 .. feature lugs with a "foot" or "ridge" on the portion of the lug that sits on the drum. Jim Corder, and then Sam Darwin, and then Tommy Robertson with Fibes Austin, all contined to use the Fibes diamond shaped lug .. but .. no ridge/foot ... the lug is just straight cut on the portion that rests on the drum itself. The main reason behind this change? Less expensive to cast! Fibes/CFMartin started to make this switch in design just before CFMartin SOLD Fibes to Jim Corder, so ... there are a few Fibes/CFMartin drums with this "new" lug ... but very few. Truly, I have only actually seen this lug on Corder, Darwin, and Fibes Austin drums, but have no doubt there is an exception or two!
