Fibes score / New member Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Hi all,

I am a new member to this forum and a new owner of a 70's Fibes, chrome over fiberglass. Short introduction: I am from The Netherlands (excuse my grammar), born in 1975, started drumming at the age of 16, stopped at 20, started again at 31 and still lovin it...

I have owned a Chrome Pearl in the 90's but sold it because me and my brother stopped drumming. And now, last week, I purchased a 70's Fibes from a Dutch version of Craigslist (it's called Marktplaats). I was not looking for a Fibes, I didnt even know the brand. I was looking for an affordable set with a 24" kick.

I stumbled upon a nice chrome set and started lookin for information. I quickly landed on this website and got a lot of information about these kits. Thanks!!

That made me immediatly call the seller and tell him I wanted to come by.

The set was for sale for 200 euro (about 270 US dollar). That's a shellset, 24-16-13. I thought it was a good price and a good sound so I bought it.

I've played it while rehearsing with my band and even already did a small gig with it. Man, I love the sound. I still have to take some time to replace the heads and tune them up but I already love the sound.

The chrome is a little rusty but okay. I'll try to attach some pictures to this post. I've seen a post from a member here that had excellent resultes from polishing (what looks like) a same Fibes-kit.

The reso-head on the kick still has the logo of the previous owner's band. That the first one I want to replace. The batterside has a Remo Powerstroke 3 and that's fine, I want to put a coated reso on the front. Can you guys advise me on that? Is an Ambassador a good choice? Or Emperor?

In time I also want to replace the tom heads.

And finally: what do you advise to use for polishing the shells?

Welcome to the forums!

Sweet kit! Great price!!!

1. Man, I love the logo on the bass drum head, I wouldn't change it.

2. Any high quality metal polish will do the shells nicely. Just make sure to use old cotton rags, an old tee-shirt, to do the polishing with. Change rags often.

3. I hope you're a young man because you'll need a strong back to haul those drums back and forth from gigs! Heavy drums!

I think you made an excellent buy. Enjoy them for many years to come. I just recently scored an American made Blaemire fiberglass drum kit and I'm loving the sound of it. Fiberglass rocks!

By the way... if you want to sell that bass drum head, I'll buy it from you! Serious offer... pm me if interested.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Nice drums, I have a kit just like those but in 24,14,16,18 and 14" matching snare. I had a thread on mine I think called Fibes drum score. I like them but not in love with them. I really need to put more effort into tuning them though.

By the way, welcome, glad to have you.

Thank you!

Welcome aboard! ...and no need to apologize for your grammar. We Americans have invested considerable laborious effort for the previous 2.5 centuries, abusing our English language into something scarcely intelligible. The English, themselves have difficulty understanding us and we, them. haha! I commend you on your multi-lingual ability!

Great find on some great drums! I have a Fibes 14x5" chrome over fiberglass snare drum, which I love.

It has long been my practice to use a thin resonant head on all my drums. A Diplomat is 7.5 mil and is preferable to a 10 mil Ambassador. Emperors are 14 mil 2 ply batter heads and do not perform well as a reso head. This may be just my opinion, however, I have Physics to back me up. That said, sound is subjective so, go with what sounds good to you. Enjoy your new drums!

Thanks for the replies y'all. I think i am gonna put Remo ambassadors on the reso side of the kick and toms and emperors on the batter side. Thanks for the polishing tips too.

Purdie: I totally agree: Fiberglass rocks!! And when that logo-resohead comes off, I will send you a pm. I expect to buy a replacement within 2 weeks. That head is an Evans, the logo is a sticker.

JC: I have seen your thread, great job! Thats the reason why i asked for the polishing tips.

Mighty Joe: thanks for the tip. I think I'm gonna go for emperors over ambassadors, to get a nice warm tone but still be punchy enough for rockstyles.

Great looking kit. Is that where you play them or did you just set them up for pics? Hard floors and ceramic tile walls = deaf....lol

Thanks! Yes, I actually played them there. It was a one-time rehearsel spot before the gig, wasn't bad though.

Hey y'all! I have cleaned and polished this kit, replaced the heads with coated emps over coated ambs, took some time to tune them: the kit sounds great. I love it!!!
