Good Point, I have made many 18" bass drums from floor toms..I don't know why when guy's do this they don't change out the tom rims..Even just only on the back side of drum..All anyone needs to do is put 18" wood hoops on the drum no need for a Riser's...They look so ..Hmmmm..on the drum...Mikey
I agree no riser and i made one once and left the front hoop stock and just put a wood hoop on the batter side worked fine and looked good too... at least to me... :)
I converted a 16x16 MIJ floor tom into a bass drum, but used a riser and wood hoops. You can see that I just used Ludwig spurs in 2 of the existing leg holders and added a cymbal arm in the 3rd. I also added 1 more for the 16" ride and mounted a 12" tom on it. This little kit sounds pretty damn good, if I may say so myself! Perfect for quiet rehearsals.

Agreed, that Gibraltar rail mount is pretty nifty.
I have an 18" MIJ shell, two wood hoops I've been sitting on for years. Need to get it wrapped, buy some lugs, ... gotta get on top of that one.
