Floor Toms, the hardest part? Last viewed: 36 minutes ago

In the 50's and 60's Rogers had kits with no floor tom, some built around the less expensive drums and with painted finishes, but also built around the Holiday drums with a wrapped finish. A basic student kit was a 20/12 and 6-lug snare.

BunE - You're showing your age! LOLI grew up in Manhattan, started playing clubs & bars at 16. Me and the bass player used to wrestle my drums around the city on buses, subways and big yellow Checker Marathon taxi's. It was such a hassle. Ah, the good old days! lolJohn

There is a talent agent in Toronto, who is now in her 70's , who drives around in a pink Checker. She is quite obvious. ---had the whole car redone about 8 years ago----spent a bundle on it. I drove it once-----what a tank.

Is a tenor drum another name for the tom tom? And what came first- kits with 1 rack tom or just the floor tom?

A lot of musicians didn't have cars back in the 50's and earlier. They had to carry their drums onto busses, cabs, or trains. A floor tom was one drum too many.

Carl!! Hey man, is that you? I haven't seen you in ages! BEC/Carl!! Nice to see that you are still around!

I own a Ludwig 'Combo" kit. 12,20 14x5 jazz fest snare. When I first bought it from a guy on Craigs list I thought the floor tom was missing but after posting some pics I was told it was probably a Combo. Thats how it was sold. Another three peice was called the Traveler. It was my first real vintage drum kit and I still love it. I am on the look out for a floor tom.

Oddly enough in the 80's here in California it was cheaper to buy a second bass drum and pedal than it was to buy dw's fangled new double pedal. Double bass was all the rage, and trying to fit a 6 piece and a bass rig in a '74 LTD was still a challenge.

Can't imagine hauling a drumset on a bus, in California they probably wouldn't stop for you.

I like Drums...

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
