Fullerton question Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Hi Rogers experts. I have the chance to purchase a 1972 Fullerton era Rogers kit for $550. Would probably take $500. Sizes are 22x14 - 16x16 12x10 - 11x9. Script badges. Speckled interiors - re-rings. Missing mufflers. Only drawback is the color - black. Just doesn't do a thing for me. Wrap is in good shape with the usual scuffs. FT seam may be lifting a bit. Chrome is good.

Is this a decent price and were these still Rogers quality before they went south?

Thanks so much

Dave

Drums made during 1972 period can be fine. Check bearing edges and so forth. Price is in the ball park, as they are not too sought after.

Tom sizes seem odd though. I would expect 8x12 and 9x13 or maybe 9x13 and 10x14???

As to black, I love jet black. I only wish they had offered it with red sparkle inlay. Ever see a black car with a red interior. Nice!

I think that you need to measure those two smaller toms again. The proper way to measure the depth is from one edge of the wood shell to the opposite edge of that wood shell. I don'r think that Rogers made an 11" diameter drum in modern history.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Never thought I would like the solid black either but after I found mine and cleaned them up I love them . They grew on me very fast. The quality of mine are great. I think they are 3 ply as they sure seem lighter and thinner than my Big R shells. I know they made some 3 ply Fullerton shells for a while. My toms are 9"x13" and 10"x14". I am only using the 13" one right now. I think you would like them very much once you clean them up and hear them. I probably polished mine 3 or 4 times with Meguires PlastX, and a coat of turtle wax and a good buffing and my shells look great.

From the first time I saw mine, never thought they would look this good.

Black is very forgiving to clean up.

I'm 100% in agreement Plowman. Quality did not go SOUTH after Swivo-matic.

bmw2002 - I had a near miss to purchase that car for $16k with 43,000 miles! It showed up for sale 1000 miles further away for $22k the next week. And no, my kit probably would not fit in it. You might get one of those Ludwig Breakbeats in.

I had owned a 2001 roadster and wasn't able to get two hand-carry suitcases in the trunk. Talk about dammit.

Vibes raises a very good topic regarding buffing. Submit those babies to someone who knows how to buff. A pro or someone you are sure knows how to do it, and you will be stunned what a difference it can make. Heuer Lab's buffed my red onxy set after I had them correct the bearing edges. They were great before I sent them and came back like showroom new. The bearing edges are like Dynasonics now too. This was a case where the edges were probably done by a new hire and then got past QC (1969). On the 13, there was a portion that had barely been touched. But the whole set was so nice overall and the price I bought them at so good that it made it obligatory to invest in the correction.
