Without seeing the lugs or the strainer It's hard to tell.

Depends. They switched lugs around 1955. Pre 1955 it was easy to tell a RK snare. After 1955 They started to transition them out so it becomes a bit harder. Best way to truly tell is if the hoop has the Radio King engraving on it. If it doesn't it may not be a Radio King.

If it is, it's a 3 ply not a solid shell model.

I didnt know radio king snares ever had 3 ply shells. I thought they continued to sell the radio king snare up through the 70's and it had a solid shell (?)

The solid shells were done after 1955 / 1956. When the company changed hands in 1955 they changed direction, mainly due to the changes in music going on at the time. Even the snares with the RK name produced after 1955 aren't what you typically think of when you hear Radio King.

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/slingerland_snare_page.html This page shows single ply shells in both 1959 and "1960's" dates.. So whats the story ?

I may have been mistaken on my time table. Perhaps it was after 1960 when they stopped making solid shell snares. I know they weren't called Radio King snares after '55. The solid shells were Gene Krupa models. So while they did make solid shell, they weren't " technically " Radio Kings.
