Yeah I got to cleaning them up yesterday and no luck, all Black Panther all day. I would have cried if there would have been citrus mod under there. Thats my holy grail kit that I will probably never find. Anyhow, they are cleaning up nicely and will make a great kit!

From jccabinets

This has been interesting. I have not ever seen the Black Panther finish. Is it like leather or cloth?Jeff C

Jeff - Ludwig (along with many other drum companies) used -surplus auto paints- to do the kits. Black Panther is the same stuff they used on cars, you know, the same black, grainy, leathery covering used on car tops. That's all it is.

Thanks WFL, Mikey et. al. for chiming in and setting the record straight.

Too many great drums to list here!

Maybe some of you guys that were drumming in the 60's can answer this..

Obviously things are rare when not many are around and of coarse tastes change over the years but I am generally curious as to what guys thought about the psych/mod finishes back in the day? A lot of times a new color could be the result of a cultural thing happening like black panther or psychedelic red/mod orange which appeared around the summer of love. It almost seems like that very colorful summer of psychedelics had a short impact on style as it looks to me that lots of guys favored either a sparkle color a natural color or a solid black towards the end of the 60's. It actually seems as if the beatles practically influenced everything!

I'm just curious because you don't really see many famous players back then using the tripped out colors. Of coarse John densmore had the mod orange downbeat but I can't think of one well known famous drummer playing psych red. Did you guys like these colors then or were they kind of a joke? I'm really just curious as it's easy to look back on something and wonder what was being thought!

I love the color orange so the mod orange has always appealed to me but I was born in 1970 so by the time I was a teenager the standard colors were solid black, white ot maybe silver or maroon. Thanks for the insight!

Ed "Cass" Cassidy of Spirit had a triple tom kit in Psych Red,along with TWO HUGE (32"-36"?) Psych Red BD's mounted on stands..one on both sides of him..

I am sure that someone can scare up a pic or two..

Prolly on YT also in a video or three...
