Getting a Bad Feeling _ eBay Purchase Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

Won an auction on eBay 2 days ago for 3 drum shells and the seller is fairly non communicative _ and when he does communicate it is downright unpleasant and borderline hostile.

He was very reluctant to supply any details before the auction and has responded to one email after the auction closed.

Now I understood this from the get go _ but I really wanted the drum shells.

Here they are and I think you will see why.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/AQUA-SPARKLE-VINTAGE-DRUM-SHELLS-/300883021742?ViewItem=&item=300883021742&nma=true&si=RQaHOCoAedyDo%252B72kNh9YZWl%252BcU%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Here's my problem. As you can see there are only 2 images in the listing.

You cannot see all sides of the drums.

When I inquired about other unseen mounting holes the seller says and I am quoting:

"There are no holes and the shipping is a flat rate so you shouldn't have bid ! You are obligated now I would appreciate a prompt payment"

A man of few and crude words. That last bit is his response to my asking for other non expedited shipping options.

The dilema _ how can vintage shells in such a configuration exist without ANY mount ever being placed on ANY of the 3 drums.

Could be a vigin kick and rack tom I suppose _ but the floor tom must have had leg mounts at some point.

The silver gray paint and a rewrap could hide all kinds of stuff.

Bottomline is I believe the seller knows more than he is letting on _ and for some reason doesn't care to reveal what he knows. Which makes me get a queasy feeling in my gut

Anyways _ I've never been involved in an eBay purchase so unpleasant.

Any ideas on how to handle this?

Yeah, maybe a little hostile, but sounds like he was afraid you'd try to back out of the sale. Looks like some leg mount holes on interior pic, (top center) as well as possibly a double tom post hole, center bottom on same pic. Wrap looks cool in pics.

I would say that is a pretty good gamble on your part. If those are Gretsch shells that price is pretty great. I love the color and hopefully it was installed well. Let it ride and see what you get.

Well yeah I am in Lust with the color _ that was at least 50% of my interest in the shells _ the other 50% was in hoping they are Gretsch shells and not Asian.

@ DaddyNowhere

Wasn't trying to get out of the sale _ but I was trying to gently persuade him to reduce the shipping charges a bit. That square like mark at the upper edge of the floor tom is I think where the muffler mount was _ and I think it was a gretsch mount _ I am currently working on a gretsch tom shell and it has an almost identical pattern _those two vertical lines with close grouped holes. And if you look close there is an identical pattern at the other end of the shell.

I very much hope there is NOT a double tom post hole cut in the bass drum _ because thats exactly what I was trying to find out _ to which the seller says _ "there are no holes".

Did anybody else notice a central re-ring in the floor tom shell? Or are my eyes playing tricks? Don't think gretsch ever did that.

Seller has consistently refused to send the spacing dimensions from an empty lug/casing slot of the holes cut into the shells despite numerous kindly worded requests to do so _ which just seems a bit bizaare to me. Most sellers are anxious to supply any specifics regarding their stuff in order to make the sale. That he didn't care to bother to do so _ without any explanation says something. I'm just not sure what.

Nasty or not, the guy has a 100% positive feedback rating for 124 sales.

Stop worrying. Nice shells. Luan?

Those look like 50's Gretsch with the "backwards"bearing edges.

I'm sincerely hoping the're not luan.

That 100% positive rating is about to change.

I have never left anything but 100% positive feedback for any eBay transaction. I generally abide by the adage "if you don't have anything good to say ..." for transactions I was unsatisfied with I just didn't leave feedback at all.

This guy is different. Ignored numerous messages for details on the shells and when he finally did answer he seemed ambiguous to the details or offended at the request. Then I just don't like sellers that pad their shipping to establish what is essentially a Reserve Bid Price.

You mean cut from the outside of the shell?

Thats the way it looked to me too _ but really I know very little about Gretsch drums.

What about that re-ring in the 16" shell _ did Gretsch ever do that?

I'm not sure why you bought these if you weren't 100% comfortable with what you were getting into?

Now, you have committed to a "pig in a poke", but at least you got to see the head, so you know it is a pig...:)

If they were such a good deal that you couldn't help yourself, then be happy with your purchase and wait and see what arrives. If they don't fit the bill, then rework them or move them on to someone else.

My kit:
Ludwig Vistalite Big Beat set consisting of:
14” X 22” bass, 16” X 16” floor tom, 8” X 12” ride tom, 9” X 13” ride tom, 5” X 14” snare
Ludwig 201 Speed King bass drum pedal
Ludwig 1124 Spur-lok hit-hat with Ludwig Standard Paiste 14” cymbals (760 & 770 gr) with ching-ring
Two Ludwig Standard S-270 cymbals stands
18” Zildjian crash cymbal (1550 gr) and 20” Zildjian ride cymbal (2130 gr) with CAMCO sizzler
Gibraltar motorcycle seat-style drum throne with backrest

Well first I've wanted to wrap a kit in this exact color _ what I would call an aquamarine - for quite awhile. That one even came up for sale was a little surprising to me.

Secondly I'm pretty careful about my Buying and Bidding habits which means that I try to do research and inquire about the details before submitting a Bid offer. That method which has served me well was circumvented in this case by the sellers seeming unwillingness to supply any detail, and a tone of general unfriendliness to discuss the auction at all. Most folks aren't like that.

So, like I said whan I opened the post, I had some reservations about the auction but moreso with the sellers attitude _ perhaps I've been lucky but 99% of my transactions on eBay have been positive.

In the end I wanted the shells more than I wanted to snub the seller I guess.

I PAID the sellers invoice about 3 hours ago so I guess I'll find out.

I think I started the thread for reassurance that other knowlegable people here on VDF would draw similar guesses about the shells identity and to calm myself down _ I really didn't want to match the sellers nastiness with a nasty retort of my own.
