Good Slingerland "Club Date" Find!-Need help from all you Slingerland Guys Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Hello Everyone!

I found a set of Slingerland "Club Date" style drums for a real good price! They have Niles badges, and the "chocolate milk" interiors with re-rings match my 1966 Slingerlands. Please check out the photos, and I'll have some questions following.

Everything pictured (the kit, a Ludwig flat base cymbal stand in great condition, and an old A. Zildjian 24" ride with a small crack along the base of the bell going parallel with the grooves) cost me $120!

The kit (8" x 12", 14" x 14" and 14" x 20"):

The kit back view

Close up of tom mount-the original mount is gone and looks like the holes were filled in. Is this a Set-O-Matic mount?

Another close up of the bass drum-it appears a cymbal holder was once attached with the holes now filled in.

The badge on the rack tom

The floor tom-with a weird clip-lock style mount and the leg brackets are gone with the holes filled in.

They aren't in too bad of shape, really. My guess is the former owner(s) took the wrap off and gave it a stain or clear coat?

Here are my questions:

1. Is there an "official" name for this type of kit, such as a club date for Ludwig etc? What approximate years of production are we looking at?

2. Do the spur brackets appear to be correct (original)? What about the T-rods and claws?

3. What type of tom and cymbal holder should this kit have (original)?

4. These are obviously good candidates for a re-wrap job. What is a good Slingerland wrap color that is period appropriate?

5. I'll be needing some parts to complete this project (12" and 14" Stick Saver hoops (1 each), floor tom leg brackets and legs, spurs, tom mount, cymbal mount etc.) You know what to do if you have any that you are willing to part with.

Thanks and I'll look forward to your feedback!

Nice find for $120. I am not too much help on these. That looks like a Set-O-Matic, but I am not entirely sure what the larger hole spacing might have been.

Does there happen to be a "P" or an "M" stamped on the inside of any of the shells?

I am not a guru... but here is what I recall.

Great buy for that money... should be a great project and a super kit when it is back together.

Slingerland center lug kits were call "Stage Band" kits.

That tom mounting hardware doesn't look the right period to me... it appears that should be a center mounted rail mount with a shell mount cymbal holder there beside it.

66 maybe a little earlier seems right... check the identification section on this site.

Not a Guru... just interested..

Thanks for all the info and kind words!

According to the catalog link (thanks vintagemore2000!), it's hard to tell what type of mount this kit originally had. Based on the way it is offset, I would say it's a rail mount. I found this photo online:

and this link to another thread on this forum:

http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=8422

It looks like the hole pattern on that thread matches up with the holes on my bass drum.

Here are my further questions (sorry, I am not up on my Slingerland knowledge):

1. In what years were Stage Band kits made? With the re-rings and "chocolate milk" interiors, I know they can't be any older than 1966, according to the Vintage Drum Guide.

2. Were the Stage Band kits of lower quality or "starter" kits as compared to regular issue Slingerlands?

3. According to the catalog ad for these drums, they were available in Lacquer, Pearl or Satin Flame finishes. Do you think my drums are original in finish? Also, it doesn't say anything about sparkles, but the link to the thread above shows a Blue Sparkle Stage Band Bass Drum. Maybe they expanded/decreased the finish options over time?

4. Were the other components (cymbal arm, floor tom leg brackets, spurs etc.) the same on the Stage Band kits as on regular Slingerlands?

5. Are these any more/less collectible/desirable than other Slingerland kits?

Thanks for your help everyone!

Similar to what ludwig did with the clubdate, the stage band had the same shells as Slingerland's higher end sets, just basically snare lugs on all the drums, so they were a more affordable set originally but less hardware on the shell can make for a more desireable sustain from the shells.

The sizes 12/14/20 are definitely popular again today, especially 14"floortoms.

I don't see too many of these around, but the bane of Slingerland is they fetch less than their competitors. (If you are keeping them then then it doesn't matter)

"pearl" finish would include sparkles. The term pearl was used on all plastic coverings, except satins, ie "sparkling red pearl"

Look on the inside of the shells there should be a date stamp and a stamp with either an M or a P. about 3/4" in size.

M was for mahogany(or maple) P is for Pearl.

If its got the P, it's had the pearl taken off and has been stained.

If your kit is stamped M, it could have been a Duco (painted)or stain. you can't really wrap it. Duco, stain and lacquer finished drums are "fatter" than pearl drums so if you wrap them the heads will not fit.

The duco drums were more budget priced in their day, but are actually more in line of what makes vintage drums sound so good to begin with.

Thin shells, minimal hardware, all wood construction.

Btw put a magnet on your sticksaver hoops and see if they are brass or steel.

Awesome project, I am envious.

And once agin with the blue hydraulic heads on a vintage wood finish set!

The worst thing that ever happened to drums from the late 60's and early 70's was the 80's.

Is that bass drum head calf or Kevlar ?

Thanks clubdate!

Upon closer examination I do see a "P" stamped inside the rack tom and floor tom. Also, "November 1966" is stamped inside the rack tom.

Yeah, that bass drum head is Kevlar. Single headed and crappy non-sustaining heads. Why didn't the previous owner just play on cardboard boxes and be done with it?

I recently picked up Slingerland Stage Bands, but the floor tom doesn't have a badge, and I can't spot any place where a hole has been filled in. In fact, only the snare has the black/brass badge due to the BD having an aluminum set-o-matic mount installed, and the mount tom being a re-wrapped, concert tom conversion.

The red sparkle wrap looks origina, so did Slingerland NOT put badges on some of these kits and put them on some as is indicated in the WMP kit above?

Thanks,

Brian
