Good way to remove sticky foam from anvil case? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I have a 14'' anvil snare drum case with old foam that's coming off and sticky as all get out.

Was hoping some others have had some experience with getting this off the case?

It's also stuck to the Supra that was inside, but I'm going to strip that down and Dawn bathe etc...

i have 3 road cases from famous bands. 2 had real old foam and it had to be taken out. i found nuts and bolts imbeded in the foam and i even found a few t-rods and a connecting rod for a dbl pedal. only the connecting rod was 1/2 visable.

whatever solvent i had at the time only melted the form even further, so i took a putty knife and scrap it all out. most of it came out pretty easy but it does gum up the blade. just wear a glove because if the knife gets caught on the wood, i may suddenly break loose and cut you.

after that i did not take them down to wood by sanding (and i didn't have a sander at the time) so i took some bass drum head boxes and cut them to size to use as a inner lining. came out perfect.

Recently had a set of anvil cases (24,24,14,15,16,18) that the foam was deteriating so bad it would sort of dissolve in your hand...sticky was indeed the word! I scrapped most of it off with a putty knife, and even my shop vac took most of it off. I then went to Walmart and purchased 10 yards of a thick black felt material and three cans of spray adhesive (total $47). Had them all finished in a day.

Ahh, so avoiding the solvents and more work, you relined with felt! :)

I just have the 1 case.

Going to have a really nice cleaned up Supra for sale soon too, keystone badger, is my brothers and he wants me to sell it. Just have to strip it apart and Dawn bathe it to get this sticky foam off! :)

Thanks for the tips so far guys!

Here's the sticky foam on the Supra and the classic way over stretched Remo snare side head that will be changed over to the correct Ludwig WeatherMaster snare side:

If that were mine I would get all of the foam you can off the rims/lugs with an old credit card/ soft chunk of wood... Nothing metal or very hard.

Saturate remaining foam with goo gone or 99% denatured. Thumb works well to get the layers of glue/foam off. Last layer off with microfibre towels. Paper ones will scratch. Dawn then Vinegar soaks to get the rest of the grime and rust off. Ready for polish and wax.

Case, if you are replacing the foam the glue residue is a good base for next batch of glue. 80 grit sandpaper to get old glue level, wipe with 99%. Good to go.

Nothing special here but I like them.

Simply stripped the snare all down and Dawn/LA's Totally Awesome soaked for half the day did the trick, all the sticky and foam is long gone. Dawn must have some special powers!

For the case, I will mix some Dawn/LA's up in a spray bottle and saturate the case.

I hate working with fumey solvents whenever possible :D
